I've been employed starting at the German Township Police Department as a reserve officer.

I worked for the Miami Valley Hospital Police Department. I worked for the University of Dayton Police Department. I worked at the City of Troy Police Department and I'm currently employed at BCI.

SPEAKER_3 (1:05)

How long have you been employed with BCI?

Joseph Wilhelm (1:07)

Three and a half years.

SPEAKER_3 (1:09)

What are your primary responsibilities in the cybercrime?

Joseph Wilhelm (1:14)

I collect and analyze and examine digital evidence.

SPEAKER_3 (1:20)

Could you please describe your educational background relevant to digital forensics?

Joseph Wilhelm (1:26)

I have a bachelor's degree in computer engineering from Rice State University.

SPEAKER_3 (1:33)

What is digital forensics?

Joseph Wilhelm (1:36)

Digital forensics is the examination of electronic devices. In this case, for me, relevant to criminal investigation.

SPEAKER_3 (1:48)

Can you generally describe how a digital forensics examiner conducts a typical investigation?

Joseph Wilhelm (1:54)

Yeah. So the examination process for digital forensics typically involves obtaining and identifying the evidence.

There's a process by which there's normally an image of the evidence or a forensic copy of the image is created. And then from that forensic copy, there's an analysis that is done to interpret the data.

SPEAKER_3 (2:19)

What certifications do you hold for any forensic contamination tools or methodologies?

Joseph Wilhelm (2:24)

I am a certified Celebrite operator, Certified Physical Analyst.

I've taken the Celebrite Advanced Smartphone Analysis class. I'm a Celebrite Certified Mobile Examiner, Breakey Certified Investigator, Breakey Certified Examiner, Magnet Certified Forensic Examiner, and I'm certified in a company that does vehicle forensics called Berla.

SPEAKER_3 (3:05)

What's Celebrite?

Joseph Wilhelm (3:08)

Celebrite is a company that creates software and tools to extract and analyze digital from the candidates.

SPEAKER_3 (3:18)

How about Breakey?

Joseph Wilhelm (3:20)

So, Breakey is the tool, Magnet is the company. Magnet is essentially Celebrite's competitor. They also create devices to extract that and analyze evidence.

SPEAKER_3 (3:33)

And how are the certifications you just read off recognized in the field of digital forensics?

Joseph Wilhelm (3:41)

They are the standard for the vendor tools.

SPEAKER_3 (3:46)

What do these certifications require in the way of continuing education and recertification?

Joseph Wilhelm (3:52)

They require you to, it varies on what the specifics of which belong. Some of them require you to assert that you have done a certain number of devices and used the tools. Some of them require you to take an exam. Some of them require you to take additional classes and training.

There's ongoing training and experience required for most of these certs.

SPEAKER_3 (4:18)

What types of devices have you examined in your work with BCI?

Joseph Wilhelm (4:22)

I've examined vehicles, cell phones, computers, DVRs, watches, IoT devices, really anything digital.

SPEAKER_3 (4:35)

Have you previously been admitted in court as an expert in the area of DigitalForensics?

Joseph Wilhelm (4:41)

I have.

SPEAKER_3 (4:42)

You know, I'd move at this time to certify this witness as an expert in DigitalForensics. Any objection? No, Your Honor.

Joseph Wilhelm (4:48)

The court will deem this witness, Mr. Wilhelm, as a DigitalForensic expert.

SPEAKER_3 (4:54)

How were you dispatched to assist in the investigation into the death of Ashley Flynn in Tip City?

Joseph Wilhelm (5:00)

I was called to assist the Tip City police departments. First, I think BCI got a hold of me, maybe my boss did, saying that there was a request for assistance, but the first person I talked to at the Tip City police department was Detective Mike Morgan.

SPEAKER_3 (5:16)

Where did you respond?

Joseph Wilhelm (5:18)

It was, I think that was the end of the day, Monday, so the following day, I believe Tuesday, I responded to the Tip City police department.

SPEAKER_3 (5:27)

And did you eventually go out to 932 County Hand Court?

Joseph Wilhelm (5:31)

I did.

SPEAKER_3 (5:32)

What is the search warrant?

Joseph Wilhelm (5:34)

A search warrant is a legal document in order obtained from a court to search a particular item or place for evidence.
