Jared Schultz (0:20)
Jared Schultz. Schultz is spelled S-C-H-U-L-T-Z.
SPEAKER_4 (0:24)
Where are you currently employed?
Jared Schultz (0:26)
I am employed with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations.
SPEAKER_4 (0:29)
What's your current position with the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation?
Jared Schultz (0:33)
I am a Forensic Science Lab Tech 2
SPEAKER_4 (0:37)
What does that mean?
Jared Schultz (0:39)
That means I am a forensic technician. My specific field that I focus on is NIBIN. NIBIN? Yes.
SPEAKER_4 (0:47)
How do you spell that?
Jared Schultz (0:48)
N-I-B-I-N.
SPEAKER_4 (0:50)
What does that stand for?
Jared Schultz (0:52)
That stands for the National Integrated Ballistic Information Network.
SPEAKER_4 (0:56)
When you say that's what you specialize on, is that what you deal with on a day-to-day basis?
Jared Schultz (1:01)
It is, yes.
SPEAKER_4 (1:02)
Anything else?
Jared Schultz (1:03)
I also perform firearm operability.
SPEAKER_4 (1:06)
How long have you been employed with BCI?
Jared Schultz (1:09)
For about three and a half years.
SPEAKER_4 (1:11)
What's your educational background?
Jared Schultz (1:13)
I have a four-year degree, a bachelor's of science in criminal justice from Bowling Green State University.
SPEAKER_4 (1:20)
What kind of specialized training have you completed in forensic science?
Jared Schultz (1:24)
I have two certifications, both from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that are known as ATF. One is in triage and acquisition, and the other is in correlation for NIBIN.
SPEAKER_4 (1:39)
So those are all specific to NIBIN?
Jared Schultz (1:41)
Yes, they are.
SPEAKER_4 (1:42)
What is triage?
Jared Schultz (1:43)
Triage is the process of reviewing fire cartridge case evidence for entry into NIBIN.
SPEAKER_4 (1:51)
I'm sorry, what was the second thing you said?
Jared Schultz (1:53)
Acquisition.
SPEAKER_4 (1:53)
And what's acquisition?
Jared Schultz (1:54)
Acquisition is the process of actually using the instrument to acquire the images for the database.
SPEAKER_4 (2:00)
When did you complete that training?
Jared Schultz (2:02)
It would have been sometime around the end of the summer of 2023, August, July.
SPEAKER_4 (2:11)
You said triage and acquisition was there one more thing?
Jared Schultz (2:13)
Yes, correlation training.
SPEAKER_4 (2:15)
What does that mean?
Jared Schultz (2:16)
Correlation is right after the images have been acquired in NIBIN. We will look at them using a side-by-side viewer with our exhibit in reference to other exhibits looking for the potential lease.
SPEAKER_4 (2:28)
Can you please explain to the jury what NIBIN is?
Jared Schultz (2:31)
NIBIN is a database consisting of images and 3D scans of fire cartridge casings. It is used to link crime scenes to one another using those images and 3D scans.
SPEAKER_4 (2:45)
How is it used to link crime scenes with 3D scans?
Jared Schultz (2:51)
The database finds cartridge case exhibits that have similar characteristics and we view those in a side-by-side, looking for matching characteristics between the two.
SPEAKER_4 (3:02)
When you say we, that's what you do?
Jared Schultz (3:04)
That is what I do, yes.
SPEAKER_4 (3:06)
How many times have you done this approximately in your career?
Jared Schultz (3:10)
The acquisitions or correlations?
SPEAKER_4 (3:13)
Let's start with the acquisitions.
Jared Schultz (3:14)
Acquisitions, thousands.
SPEAKER_4 (3:16)
Correlations?
Jared Schultz (3:18)
A couple hundred, safely to say, say just a couple hundred.
SPEAKER_4 (3:26)
When you are comparing, what are you here at Lawrence, Mississippi, and NIDA?
Jared Schultz (3:33)
We are looking at fired cartridge casings.
SPEAKER_4 (3:35)
Okay. Can you explain to the jury what you're looking for in those fired cartridge casings?
Jared Schultz (3:43)
Yes. When we examine fired cartridge casings, there's a few different items we are looking at. I have an aid here.
SPEAKER_4 (3:51)
Just for the record, you brought up the monster aid with that, Your Honor.
SPEAKER_2 (3:55)
Okay. Does there any objection for him using that for purposes of his testimony?
Tony Brueski (4:00)
Yes.
SPEAKER_2 (4:02)
Okay. You may go ahead and use that to propel your testimony.
SPEAKER_4 (4:06)
Just one more second.
SPEAKER_2 (4:09)
Do you want to use the-
Tony Brueski (4:11)
Yes.
SPEAKER_4 (4:12)
Thank you.
Tony Brueski (4:21)
Go ahead.
Jared Schultz (4:22)
I'm sorry. Can you remind me of the question exactly?
SPEAKER_4 (4:24)
So what are you comparing when you're looking at a cartridge casing?
Jared Schultz (4:28)
So when we are looking at a fired cartridge casing, what we are actually looking at is the cartridge casing, which has been fired out of a firearm.
