David Nebinski (0:04)

Hey, friend, it's David Nebinski here in Brooklyn.

This episode is a replay from an episode that I've recorded on my other podcast called A Chief of Staff with David Nebinski podcast, which is connected to the company and the community that I'm building for Chiefs of Staff called A Chief of Staff. This episode was recorded with two people who had attended my events for Chiefs of Staff in New York before, and we just candidly talked about the community that I've been building, and the past year of my solopreneur work transition and the emergence path that I've been on. So yeah, I thought I would share this kind of behind the scenes and interesting look at what I've been up to with people who've been a part of it, thankfully, and so many other people, just like the list goes on and on and on. And so yeah, I thought this would be interesting for you. You can learn more about the A Chief of Staff community at achiefofstaffpodcast.com. There you can learn about upcoming New York events called A Chief of Staff Mixers. Episodes of that podcast, which is over 30 episodes.

I have a Chief of Staff job board and there's a Chief of Staff newsletter as well. So lots of great resources if you're in New York and you're a Chief of Staff and lots of great events as well. So yeah, thought this episode might be interesting for you. Let me know if you have any questions, reach out anytime and if you're a Chief of Staff in New York, say hello. And we're doing something a little bit different here today. What are we doing and who are you all?

Kriti (1:53)

Wow. Thanks, David. I feel like I've known you for many years, but I'm excited to have you in the hot seat here today.

My name is Kriti and I lead strategy and partnerships at NASDAQ. I've known David throughout my career and I'm just excited to ask you and get to do a date in the life of David.

Andrew (2:11)

Hey, my name is Andrew. I am a Chief of Staff at a firm that works in political advertising technology.

I've gone to a couple of events and I guess I'm super curious to know more about David, your hopes for the organization and what your day-to-day looks like, and I can't wait to learn more about you.

David Nebinski (2:33)

Likewise. I'm excited to learn more about you all. That's also part of this. I posted into our group chat a couple of weeks ago and I was like, hey, does anyone want to be a part of this experiment where I'm on the hot seat and you all can ask me questions for this pod and you too said yes? I was like, okay, I would love to get to know you all through this process if you're interested in getting to know me.

So how should we start?

Kriti (3:02)

I'd love to kick it off.

I feel like I've seen your... We met last year when you were in a transition phase and so was I, but I want to hear, take me all the way back. Take me back to your childhood, perhaps. What were you like? Are the key tenets of what you do today, what you were like in your childhood and then even through for a shop perhaps, and what drove you and what led you here today?

David Nebinski (3:30)

It's a loaded one, but take it where you want. Okay. So, let's see here. I grew up in Northern Virginia.

In elementary school, I was in a Japanese immersion program. Half of the day was in Japanese, half of it was in English. I don't know the language well. I'm glad that my parents encouraged me or opted me into this program. But I also learned like if you don't decide what you want to do, if you don't make decisions, you're less likely to really take ownership of those decisions. So, great program, learned a lot, but was not the top student and I don't know the language anymore. So, that's a little fun little thing that happened when I was growing up.

As a kid, I think of myself was like kind of shy then.

And then, you know, like I don't think that I really like grew up until after college. And that probably happened a lot. Or like losing my dad was a catalyst to that. And then I really looked up to my dad, really like appreciated my dad, valued my dad, like on many different levels. He was super cool. He didn't wear funky. He sometimes he had some quirky pants. He had his own little style.
