Literally hours ago at a conference, Blackrock was forced to explain where the next $500 billion of capital was going to come from to hit Bitcoin. And the timing of this clip is interesting because I don't know if you guys followed along, but the Bitcoin ETFs led, of course, by Blackrock, bought about 25,000 coins last week. This was the biggest weekly inflow into the ETFs of 2026, ripping over 50 days of new supply off the market. So let's listen to what Blackrock said about the next $50 billion coming to Bitcoin.

SPEAKER_2 (0:45)

So where's the next $500 billion coming from?

Robbie Mitchnick (0:49)

That's an interesting question. Maybe before we get there, I think an interesting thing to explore is the inverse of that, which is where's the next seller?

Because we've now hit this sort of fascinating moment where the person who was waiting to sell at $100K, like they had their moment. The person who was, let it hit $100K, but actually didn't pull the trigger at $100K, but then waited for it to get a little higher, they had their moment. The person who was going to sell when it dumped 50% and was in the daldrums for a while at $60K, they had their moment. So actually, I think part of what we've seen in this rebound is some degree of seller exhaustion helped by some macro catalysts, obviously. So what brings the next wave in? I would say, rather than talk about it in terms of a specific investor type, I would say what the catalyst is, is Bitcoin re-proving itself, re-cementing and strengthening that narrative as a diversifier and a hedge against some of the risks that exist out there in the world, reinforcing the idea of how Bitcoin benefits in a world of rapid AI change, reinforcing the idea of how Bitcoin is a hedge against some of the concerns that exist for debt and deficits around the world, which obviously have returned to the forefront in a big way in the last couple of months. I think that's a big driver of the rally. So that's what makes it really compelling. I think that's something that has been missed for various periods by the industry, is sort of ignoring the importance of what the trading data says and tells people, right? So if you're like just super high conviction Bitcoin, you believe that no matter what happens, like it's going to some stratospheric number, you're not phased by days and weeks and months where it trades high correlation and sells off sharply with equities. But the marginal adopter is, they pay attention to that. And so they're watching that correlation.

They're watching for evidence that it does act as a hedge and successfully dislocates from equities. And when periods like that do happen, that really catalyzes conversations. And I've seen that time after time through the cycles. When there's good episodes like that, I think the biggest one was the regional banking crisis three and a half years ago.

Bitcoin performed really well as there was turbulence in the financial system. And that got a lot of prior there are two skeptics involved. Conversely, when it sold off sharply alongside equities, particularly over the course of a couple of episodes in the last year, that caused a lot of people to hit pause and say, well, I thought this was going to be a diversifier. I thought this was its own distinct asset. I was going to use it as a hedge, but is it really a hedge? So that's really the sort of tug of war that is happening right now. And that's going to drive where we see adoption go or not.

Nico Moran (3:59)

Interesting. All right, guys. So let's kind of pull back a little bit. If you're listening to what Robbie Mitchnick, who is, I forget his official title. I think he's head of digital assets at Blackrock. That might not be the official title, but that's what he is.

He is essentially hitting on one idea here that we constantly talk about. Actually, probably everyone talks about. It's the idea, does price drive narrative or does narrative drive price? And it almost sounds like he's saying that it's narrative driving price, but I would argue that what he's really saying is like price is driving narrative. And what we have seen in the last year or so, I guess, you know, since the 2024 launch of the ETFs, we could argue that what we've seen is all of these institutions, all of the people that have been Bitcoin skeptics have been slowly, surely kind of gathering data, trying to understand exactly what Bitcoin is, trying to understand exactly how Bitcoin trades. And arguably, we have seen in the last couple of years, Bitcoin trade in a way that not only has broken Bitcoiners mind, but I think also has confused the people that are just starting to dip their toes into Bitcoin. Because we've been saying for the longest time, these ideas of what Bitcoin is, you know, parallel monetary system outside of the traditional financial system. And in the last year, since all the institutions kind of got the call, or rather, they got the nod from the Larry Finks of the world. And of course, the regulators and the institutions in the US, essentially saying, hey, look, you guys can now dip your toes into Bitcoin. They had to try to understand what Bitcoin was. And we've seen Bitcoin trade in weird ways. And look, we're not really Bitcoin traders, but we obviously follow along on the price a lot, because, hey, I know you guys hate when I say it, but Bitcoin price is signal, all right? If you believe in free markets, then you believe that price is signal, okay? Don't give me the, there's better reasons and there's more things about it. It's like, yeah, cool, cool story, bro. But the price gives us a lot of information. It might actually be the best signal we have in the market of what the market participants think about Bitcoin. And in the last couple of years, Bitcoin's traded very strangely. We haven't really seen a bull run. Bitcoin has at times traded like a risk-off asset, at times traded like a risk-on asset. At times, it's been correlated to tech stocks. It's been considered, quote, a high beta tech play. We've seen Bitcoin trade down based on macro geopolitical, you know, significant moments in the last couple of years where, hey, if there's something going on in the Middle East, particularly what happened in February of this year, Bitcoin has a very quick sell-off. And so the way it's traded recently, I think has confused a lot of people because a lot of the narratives that we've talked about in Bitcoin, I wouldn't say they've broken. They just, they haven't really played out as cleanly as we would like them to. There's been a lot of gray in the market in terms of narrative, because Bitcoin has been trading, again, very closely to a lot of things. One, now the hottest model is Bitcoin trading against the business cycle. There is, again, the correlation of Bitcoin in tech stocks. For the longest time, Bitcoin was trading, or actually not the longest time, but the last few years, Bitcoin was trading like, again, a tech stock. That's what everyone thought it was. It's like, oh, it's just a tech play. So it would kind of closely connect to the NASDAQ QQQ chart. You know, if it dumped, Bitcoin would kind of, you know, be a, again, just like a leverage.
