Hey, it's Dan Bova from Entrepreneur Media and welcome to How Success Happens. Hey, everyone. Today's guest is a universe hopper. He has lived and worked in the Star Wars universe, the LEGO universe, the Batman universe, and the universe of this under the radar sketch comedy show that's been in the air for like 50 years or something called Saturday Night Live.
In interview after interview with his co-stars and co-workers, he is consistently described as both ridiculously funny and ridiculously nice. So let's find out if that nice part is true. Welcome Bobby Moynihan.

**Bobby Moynihan** (2:36)
Shut up.
Be quiet. No, I'm not that nice all the time.

**Dan Bova** (2:44)
Hi, how are you?

**Bobby Moynihan** (2:45)
Thank you for having me.

**Dan Bova** (2:46)
Yeah, no, so great to talk to you. As you may have detected, I'm a fan of a lot of the work you've done. Not all of it, Bobby, but a lot of it.

**Bobby Moynihan** (2:56)
Just hearing you read that back, I want to know if there's like an EGOT for nerd stuff, like Star Wars, Star Trek, like getting, I think I might have an EGOT for nerd stuff.

**Dan Bova** (3:08)
Well, when, I mean, you have been a part of so many iconic things. When you do hear that list, do you still have any sense of like, holy shit, I've done some cool things?

**Bobby Moynihan** (3:23)
Yeah. Can you see my room? How much? Yeah. I'm wildly, wildly aware. No, I think now at 48, I realized I don't think I wanted to be famous. I think I just wanted to be part of a bunch of stuff that I loved and I got super, super lucky.
And I'm glad that I was not self-aware enough to realize that that's what I was doing.

**Dan Bova** (3:49)
Well, jokes on you, Bobby, you are famous.

**Bobby Moynihan** (3:53)
I know whether I like it or not.
I'm glad. I've had a wonderful time.

**Dan Bova** (4:00)
So yeah, I thought it would be so great for people.
I wanted to really pick your brain about building confidence and thinking on your feet with all the improv stuff you do and all the comedy stuff you do because I think we could all use help in those departments, whether we're an aspiring improv comedian or about to walk into a pitch meeting or something like that. But first, we always start by asking, how do you define success and how has that definition maybe changed over the years from right before you got Saturday Night Live to where you are now?

**Bobby Moynihan** (4:39)
Yeah, I think that. I think that the thing is at 48, I realized it has completely changed.
I think for a long time, it was those milestones. I always wanted to be on SNL and I took the time to try and make that happen and put myself in situations and places where it would get me closer to that. Then the fact that it actually happened is a minuscule number. I am much more aware of that now.
I am much more aware of the mathematical chances of that happening. It happened and I remember telling my parents, that's it, I did it. I got Saturday Night Live. Then, this is a bit of a bummer, but it's the truth. But both my parents passed away very shortly after my first daughter was born. I have a second daughter now and now I think it's hilarious that I was like, I got SNL. Now it's like, hey, I'm happy. I'm happy, my kids are happy. I wish they could see this. I wish they could see the not striving Bobby. I wish they could see the Bobby that is happy and can die tomorrow and would be, well, my kids would hate it, but it's nice to go like I'm in a place in my life where I'm really content and happy.
