Bill Kristol: Throw the Bums Out

The Bulwark Daily

October 5, 2026

Like all good demagogues, Trump's appeal works when he's got someone to blame. But it's on his watch that we've got a war-related global food crisis brewing and mass layoffs in Ohio—where Trump just happened to hold a rally over the weekend.

Hello, and welcome to The Bulwark Daily. I'm your host, Tim Miller. Just a scheduling item this week. If everybody could bear with me.

I'm traveling around a little bit, and we've got some great guests coming out this week. But I'm not sure I'm going to be quite as on the news as I always am. So go download The Bulwark Takes feed, because somebody else is on it. Someone at The Bulwark is on the news, no matter what. I am, for starters, tomorrow night going to be at Dartmouth at the alma mater of colleague Sam Stein, and we'll be together with our friend Liz Smith. I think that's at five o'clock at the aptly named Rockefeller Center for our people. If you're up there in New Hampshire, Vermont, come hang tomorrow night. Then I'm popping around a couple other obligations. One other thing I did want to shout out.

Please keep in your thoughts and prayers to the family of Deb Weiss, longtime Bulwark listener, commenter, viewer. She passed away over the weekend, and we got to meet her at the Minnesota event. She had a long running battle with cancer, and it was really inspiring. It was an emotional couple of nights in Minnesota, and it was really gratifying to get to meet her, and I was happy to be able to provide some comfort for somebody that really cared about the country and wanted to know there are people out there fighting while she was fighting her cancer. So, shout out to Deb Weiss and her family. Bill Kristol is with us today. It is Monday, of course. And Bill, you were with us then as well.

Bill Kristol (1:42)

I remember meeting Deb Weiss. She had asked to come up and have a photo taken with us, and she was clearly suffering from cancer, and it was very moving. As you say, it was an emotional end to an emotional couple of days, and so we obviously, she and her family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Enjoy Dartmouth. It's a nice little school, you know? It's kind of, not really, but it's, no, it is, it is nice. And I spoke there just a year or two ago.

Tim Miller (2:04)

Kind of a poor man's version of some of the other schools.

Bill Kristol (2:06)

Yeah, one might, you and Sam Stein can discuss that. I think you should raise that probably on the panel. It's kind of a good talking point there, and they'll appreciate it.

Tim Miller (2:13)

For me, I feel happy that, like, Sam and Liz tried hard in school in high school. They tested very well.

They worked hard to get into Dartmouth. As for me, not really, but I think I'm kind of the top Bill tonight, having not been brought into the Ivy.

Bill Kristol (2:29)

Yeah, they're your supporting cast, so that's good. You'll want to stress that at the beginning of the panel, too.

SPEAKER_3 (2:33)

I will, yeah, kind of how I've lapped them, if you will.

Bill Kristol (2:36)

If they put you up in the very nice in, they put me up in, and when I spoke a year or two ago, there's a very good, like, authentic handover doughnut shop right down by the block away. It's famous in Dartmouth, not really outside of Dartmouth, but you'll want to go there and mention that in your remark. I got a lot of credit somehow when I got there the night before, so I was writing Morning Shots that morning. I remember going out at 7 a.m. to get coffee, and I got a doughnut, and I got a lot of credit from the locals for, you know, patronizing their famed doughnut shop, whose name is escaping me, but you'll find it.

SPEAKER_3 (3:04)

There's only one.

Tim Miller (3:05)

There's only one. It's a very small town.

Handover doughnuts. I'll see you there tomorrow, handover doughnuts. All right. I want to start just briefly on, you know, because we covered a lot last week, Springfield, but our colleague Andrew Egger was back in Ohio over the weekend. There was a funeral for Pierre Damas Bel, which is just devastating. He writes about that in Morning Shots. And then later that same evening, Trump has this rally in a Dayton suburb. Among the things that struck me from his newsletter was that there were a bunch of other speakers. You know, Vivek spoke. He tried to pick up a small child and was unable to, dropped the kid. John Husted, running for Senate, spoke. Some other Republicans, Republicans that are, you know, right now subjecting this torture, torment onto their neighbors, the Haitians. None of them said anything about it. And then, you know, Trump was not so timid. He got up there and there were some deport, deport chants.
