Today, we had Matt Calkins on from The Seattle Times, who just quit his job because he couldn't stand the censorship anymore. Also, Patrick Bet-David was on today. I talked about burritos and politicians.
and the price of a couple of titles last week was driving me out of my mind. And I wanted to say some things that I couldn't find anybody else saying. There's common sense on both sides of this issue, and we need to be more common sense driven. Also, economic D-Day for Iran. What does that mean? Okay, so there was this debate that was going on last week about burritos, the price of burritos. And, I mean, I was checking in occasionally and just finding out what was going on. And I heard about the burrito thing, and I think, I can't believe we're arguing about burritos. And we are actually choosing, we're in this position to where last week, everyone was like, oh, that's why I'm for Marco Rubio. Whoa, that's why I'm for JD Vance. Can you please, can we get a handle on our emotions? Please. This is the conversation that I think people should have had last week about the price of burritos in America. And it says, every time I drive through, go through a drive-through window, I have the same two thoughts in the same order every time. First one, when did McDonald's for two people become 20 bucks? When did that happen? $25 for, wait, what? The second one is harder. How does the average person do this? This is McDonald's for the love of Pete. It's practically, it's a pr- I don't even know if there's any meat in their burgers anymore. That costs you 20, 25 bucks for two people. If you have kids, you're already working two jobs. How do you afford it? You're paying for gas and an electric bill that keeps going up. God help you if you had to move into a new apartment by a house after 2021 How do you do it?
Now, I want you to hold on to both of those because the country just spent a week fighting over the first one and refusing to answer the second one.
College student at Turning Point told a staffer that a burrito shouldn't cost $20. And that was the spark of this whole thing last week. And the right set itself on fire. One side said, Learn to cook, get some roommates, eat ramen. The market doesn't care what you think things should cost. And then the other side said, You haven't talked to people under 25 in a decade. Okay. All right.
Here are the facts. And I'm going to give you the facts even though they cut against some of the things that I agree with or people I agree with. Okay. The people saying a burrito doesn't cost $20 are right about the burrito. A loaded steak burrito, I can't believe I'm coming back from a vacation and I'm doing this, runs $9 to $12 in most of the country. 17 in Manhattan, one of the most expensive places to live or eat in the world. Okay. And that's if you put guacamole on it. 20 is what it costs after door dash with the service fee and the delivery fee and the tip. Now, are you getting your burritos at door dash? Because that might be a problem.
Okay.
McDonald's has published its own numbers. Not a critic's numbers, the company's numbers. The president of McDonald's USA put out an open letter with a fact sheet attached. The average big back meal, $9.29 up from $7.29 in 2019 Okay, for $7 to $9. But in that sheet was a sentence that mad. And here's what that sentence was. The average price across the whole menu is up about 40% since 2019 Over that same stretch, prices across the entire American economy rose 21%. So drive-through went up roughly twice as fast as everything else. So two big mac meals is $18.58. You weren't confused. You're doing arithmetic that you have to do because you have to keep a budget. Okay, so that's truth number one. Now here's truth number two, and it's mined, and it costs something to admit this, but it is true.
