Welcome to the Total Soccer Show Weekend Review! Game Week 3, and the Premier League has plenty of intrigue, but it looks like Arsenal may have already won the league? The Gunners came out on top in the season's first blockbuster game, but Chelsea looked exciting, and they left this one with no shame. Elsewhere, Newcastle are proving that soccer is counterintuitive and has layers, as you can still look really good when you've sold all your best players. Meanwhile, Tottenham's approach still needs refining, and Ainsley Maitland-Iles is apparently the summer's best signing. And on the continent, Barcelona looked great as they scored 5, while PSG's first win has yet to arrive.

My name's Ryan Bailey, joining me today, we've got a power trio in the house. Graham Ruthermans here, all the way from Glasgow, Scotland. Hi, Graham, how are you?

Graham Ruthermans (1:04)

I'm good, Ryan Bailey. The two of us got the black t-shirt memo today, and Joe, I don't know what he's doing over here. Come on, Joe, get your act together.

He's not normally on Weekend Review. He's out at practice. It's just frankly unacceptable. But you and I, Ryan, we're on point today.

Ryan Bailey (1:22)

Joe Larry, how are you? How are you having some workplace harassment straight out of the gate here?

Joe Lowry (1:26)

No, it's good. I just like Graham exposing that. I do go to podcast practice every Monday morning. It's TSS mandated podcast practice to get my level up to the standard that it needs to be.

I'm not committed, and I think you can tell that because I didn't know that Ainsley Niles was back in the Premier League. I don't know where. I honestly couldn't tell you any of his last several clubs, but I'm here for the redemption story and actually would very much like to learn where on earth he's been.

Graham Ruthermans (1:49)

I mean, neither did David Moyes. He looked to the bench and he was like, you, on you go. Anyone will do after our summer transfer window.

Ryan Bailey (1:56)

I'm going to say Leon on this. Was it Leon?

Joe Lowry (1:58)

Oh, it was, wasn't it? That's a great shout out.

Ryan Bailey (2:02)

Feels like one of those two. Very good.

Joe Lowry (2:04)

That is really well done, Ryan.

Ryan Bailey (2:06)

Well, if it's true, none of us have looked it up. But let's find out.

Joe Lowry (2:09)

I got it. No, we're doing it right now. Arsenal first, of course. Then Ipswich Town, loan. West Brom on loan. Roma on loan in 2022 Southampton on loan later that year. Lyon and then Everton. So Ryan, props to you.

Ryan Bailey (2:22)

Terrific. Wow. Excellent stuff. Very good. We got plenty to get to on this here weekend review. No Taylor Rock quote on this episode. He'll be back on the feed very shortly. Though, before we get to the events of the weekend, did you guys know we've got a Patreon?

Tell me more.

I'd love to. If you go there, if you put the URL into your browser of choice, you can get access to our bonus feed, TSS Plus bonus episodes, including weekend review extra. All of the weekend we cannot fit into this here episode will be going on there. I think we're going to go deep on Barcelona because they've started rather well. They had a pretty good weekend. All the Madrid teams lost and they won big. So we'll talk about Barcelona and much more on the bonus feed. Do join us over there. You'll also get access to our Discord server. All the cool kids are there talking about stuff. What stuff? Go join them. Everything.

Graham Ruthermans (3:13)

Everything under the sun is in that Discord, and I love it for that fact.

Ryan Bailey (3:18)

It's rich, varied, and compelling, the Discord. Yeah. I think there's an aviary. There is.

Joe Lowry (3:27)

You said it's rich, whatever, and compelling, and genuinely Ryan is kind of right about that.

Graham Ruthermans (3:31)

It's a great spot.

Ryan Bailey (3:32)

It is. There we go. patreon.com/totalsoccershow. Thank you to everybody in our community talking about birds and other things on there. Oh, one more thing before we get to the Arsenal-Chelsea game.

I've got a question. Joe, you ready for this question?

Joe Lowry (3:46)

I'm ready. Go ahead.

Ryan Bailey (3:47)

Are you the kind of sports fan that wants to dig into the story behind the stats? Yay or nay?

Joe Lowry (3:52)

Yay.

Ryan Bailey (3:54)

Well, Joe, maybe you should join The Athletic Live on YouTube to cover all the sports stories you can't stop talking about. I know there's so many you can't stop talking about. The Athletic Live is a new interactive live show powered by the Athletics Sports Newsroom.
