You're listening to The Beauty Brains Show, where real scientists answer your beauty questions. And now, here's Randy and Perry.

Perry Romanowski (0:19)

I'm a cosmetic chemist and one and a half of The Beauty Brains, and with me as always, Randy Schuehler. How's it going, Randy?

Randy Schueller (0:25)

Hey, everybody. Good, Perry. Happy 150th anniversary.

Perry Romanowski (0:30)

Yeah, this is episode 150 I mean, aren't we the hardest working podcasters in the beauty business?

Randy Schueller (0:36)

We are definitely the hardest working cosmetic science podcasters, no doubt.

Perry Romanowski (0:42)

Absolutely. Well, we've got a big show today. We've got a little bit of beauty science news. And then we're going to go through and answer some beauty questions that were sent in. We'll talk about micellular water. Can't wait for that talk.

And a little bit about vitamin C and whether the boosters actually work. So we've got a lot going on there.

And we could do some of our banal chit chat if we had anything.

Randy Schueller (1:08)

Let's skip the banality today. Let's get right to it.

Perry Romanowski (1:11)

Wait, before that, I wanted to talk about something that I saw, which is very troubling to me.

Randy Schueller (1:15)

Oh, I'm sorry. What's that?

Perry Romanowski (1:17)

One of my favorite websites is going to be going away.

Randy Schueller (1:21)

Is this the Gawker thing?

Perry Romanowski (1:23)

No, not Gawker. drugstore.com.

Randy Schueller (1:26)

Oh, I did see that. Yeah, I frequently go there for ingredient listings.

Perry Romanowski (1:30)

It's a great place. It's drugstore.com, but it's also beauty.com is going away. I mean, this is a great place. Yeah, I didn't really buy anything from them.

Randy Schueller (1:39)

Well, but for research purposes.

Perry Romanowski (1:42)

For research, it was great. You know what happened? They were bought out by Walgreens.

Randy Schueller (1:46)

Oh, I didn't know that.

Perry Romanowski (1:48)

Walgreens bought them out, and now they're shutting them down at the end of September, September 30th. So go to drugstore.com and just take a look around and be sad that they'll be gone. I know I am.

Randy Schueller (1:59)

I think you're now brushing up against some banality. You're getting close to it.

Perry Romanowski (2:05)

I'm the cusp of banality. Well, why don't you play that intro song for our beauty science news?

Randy Schueller (2:16)

Yeah, I'll take the first story. I thought this was an innovation that's really kind of cool.

It's a self-cleaning hairbrush.

Perry Romanowski (2:25)

It's got like little robots on it.

Randy Schueller (2:28)

No, not your nanobot idea. This is a little different.

This comes to us from the scientists at Ohio State University, Go Buckeyes, and they have...

Perry Romanowski (2:37)

It's the Ohio State University.

Randy Schueller (2:40)

Yeah, the Ohio State, of course.

Perry Romanowski (2:41)

But you're supposed to emphasize the the.

Randy Schueller (2:44)

The Ohio State University.

Perry Romanowski (2:45)

Do you ever watch college football?

Randy Schueller (2:47)

No, no. When is that on? What time is that on?

Perry Romanowski (2:50)

It just started last weekend.

Randy Schueller (2:52)

Oh, okay. I'll have to check that out. Is that on Netflix? Can I get that? All right, so anyway, these guys discovered that a lot of people apparently throw their hair brushes away because they're so hard to clean, right? They get clogged up with hair and gunk, and so it's like, ah, screw this, I'm just going to throw it away, which means hair brushes are really a sustainability issue.

We have landfills, you know, filling up these things.

Perry Romanowski (3:15)

Fill up the landfills with hair brushes.

Randy Schueller (3:17)

So, the Ohio State University researchers designed a 3D printed hair brush that has a flexible backbone. So you simply bend back the top part of the handle, and the bristles move forward, then you can easily just pull out all the hair, right? Then you let go of it, snaps back into place. So, I think it's extremely clever. Now, right now, the university is looking for marketing partners to bring this thing, you know, to commercialize it.

But I can't wait to see this hit the market, and I would suggest it may make a good gift for Mrs. Romanowski.

Perry Romanowski (3:50)

She does have a lot of hair. Because I know, because I just cleaned out our drain from her sink.

Randy Schueller (3:57)

Okay, too much information.

Perry Romanowski (3:59)

Yes. Well, you know, 3D printing, it just shows you that is the future of these sorts of things. Perhaps the folks at Goody will look into commercializing this.

I remember when I was a kid, this was back in high school, you'd always have a comb in your back pocket. My comb of choice was a Goody comb.
