Welcome back to Next Year in Investing. Really excited for this conversation as we welcome in Omri Shtayer, VP and GM of Data Solutions at Similarweb, as we try to unpack and explore the unknowns of Anthropic, as this company, of course, is not only a big discussion point for all of its different relationships with the already public companies like Nvidia, but it's potentially going to be public investing choice here soon. So Omri, I know you guys recently published a report looking at some of the data and trends that you're seeing. I'm curious what some of the big takeaways were.

Omri Shtayer (0:39)

Thanks for having me, Alex. Great to be here. I think it's one of the most exciting reports we got to work on recently, and it's not just one number. It's a mix of different numbers that are talking about and explaining what's going on with the company right now. We're seeing growth not only in the website visits to Claude, but it's also about how many people use their mobile app. So the monthly active users in their mobile app is growing by 17x over the last year, reaching about 150 million users of their app.

It's not only that, they're also taking share from their competitors. So they grew from 2 percent to 9 percent market share in the last year. They're growing their signups, they're growing their retention over time, and their corporate enterprise logins over time. This is very exciting numbers to look at, and it's changing every month. It's some of them are growing, some of them are actually plateauing.

So it's really important to track not just one number, but actually the full picture of what's going on with Anthropic.

Alex (1:43)

Having taken a look at some of your published data within that report, it appears very clear that from a market share standpoint, Claude and Anthropic are winning market share from their competitors. And we know that they're looking to potentially become a public company ahead of some of their private peers. How important is it that they're kind of the leader, they're the winning, they're accelerating the fastest, I guess is the best way I could put it, versus their peers as we speak right now.

Omri Shtayer (2:19)

Yeah. So right now they're not the biggest, but they are accelerating really quick. And I think it's not only that, because if you look at how they're accelerating, it's actually organic. They're not paying for their clients, they're not paying for their users, they're actually growing organically. We did see a big jump after the Super Bowl ads and what they advertised there, but it kept on growing even after. So it's not just one time event, it's actually growth over time without paying a lot for the users. Their public relations is doing very well and without spending a lot of marketing.

So we're actually seeing this growth, not only take and share, but actually being organically growing.

It's also the users are sticking with them more. So I think it tells you a story about the product quality of what they're building. Because if people come in and you buy the traffic and first time use of Claude, and then you stay with them for a long period of time, that means that the product is actually working. And those habits, daily habits, monthly habits are very, very important for this type of product, this type of AI market right now.

When you look at this space and you try to assess some of the trends you're seeing from how consumers are interacting with this software, whether it's Anthropic or just a broader space, and maybe try to compare it to other things that consumers use, what do the retention numbers look like relative to kind of traditional software? Is it favorable for these companies or do they have some work to do in that line of things?

Omri Shtayer (4:03)

So it seems like it's stabilizing with real traditional software compared to what it was a year ago or two years ago. It's about between 60 to 80% in this market. Charles GPT, by the way, is actually has a better retention than Claude at this moment.

But it is a very important statistic compared to the software. It's also traditional software. Whenever it's growing, the retention numbers are actually sometimes dropping. And what we see here is not only that the retention is growing by from 25 to 45% in a six month retention, but it's also the new users are six times more. So they're not only gaining stickier users, but they're also getting many more users, which traditional software is very hard. It's very hard to do in traditional software. It's a statistic that most software do not get right, or they're either improving one or the other, but not both of them at this pace and rate.
