Politics War Room with James Carville & Al Hunt

October 8, 2020

The President and his team have been infected with the Coronavirus, giving new significance to the phrase October Surprise.  But even though James and Al think an electoral blow out is coming, it’s too early for Democrats to get comfortable— there are too many threats.

Hello, and welcome to Politics War Room with James Carville and Al Hunt. We have a new segment this week where we answer your questions. That's if we're able to. So if you have a question you want to ask us, write to us at Politicon on Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook for next week's show. We've been inundated with questions, and we'll try to get to most of them. This episode is sponsored by Hydrant, Magic Spoon, and SteadyMD. We thank them for their support of the podcast, and we thank you for listening. And please tell your friends and remind them to subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, or wherever you get your podcasts. James, we got a lot to talk about, but was it really a week ago that we did this podcast? It seems like a year. So much. I mean, polls, national and state show, it's time to rev up the bus. The fat ladies singing this presidential race is over.
Trump got COVID-19 and predictably brought out all of his evil.
That charade pep rally for Amy Barrett at the White House was an infectious landmine.
Then he got the COVID-19, went to Walter Reed, forced Secret Service stations to drive him around outside risking their lives or their health at least to solve his insecure ego. And he went to, actually before that, he went to a fundraiser when he knew he had it up in New Jersey.
You know, look, nothing he does surprises us. I'm going to tell you one thing, James, that is, I am a little scared. 26 days to go, facing a big defeat, he has no morals or guardrails. What might he do?

**James Carville** (2:11)
Yeah, I look, I don't know.
I wish we'd had a medical professional tell us what the side effects of his steroids are, but a friend of mine who's doing well, but had colon cancer, had to take it before treatment. And he said, man, that's going to make you crazy.
But besides that, I think there were two really interesting and significant events. The first one was John Cronin, the Republican incumbent in Texas, went to the Houston Chronicle and criticized Trump's response to the virus. That immediately tells you he's getting slaughtered on the west side of Houston and woodlands and these kinds of places. I mean, he's trying in Texas. And then last night...

Districts that used to vote for George Bush.

**James Carville** (3:00)
Yes.

**Al Hunt** (3:01)
Yes.

**James Carville** (3:01)
This is exactly...
He is getting killed by, you know, a white college in Texas on the virus. And then last night in Arizona, Martha McSally refused to kind of say nice things about Trump. And it kept pressing him. Now, the Arizona Republicans, there's no lack of right-wing Republicans in Arizona. But the fact that she is in a race, in his distancing, you've got two people, and she's almost in an impossible race, she's going to lose. Cronin is in a tough race that most people think he'll probably in the end win, I'm not sure they're right. And I think you're going to see more and more of this.
I wouldn't be, you know, you don't see people trying to distance themselves from him.

**Al Hunt** (3:49)
Yeah, you do. You know, one thing that it's taken some people a long time to learn, the latest person who should have learned it, learned it was the White House physician.
And that is that when you lie down with dogs, you get fleas.
This was, he got COVID-19, the president got COVID-19. I think most people thought, gosh, I hope he's going to be all right, even those of us that can't stand him politically. But instead, what they do is that they lie and they fabricate and they try to spin this and they make it far, far worse. And that's why the Cornins and the McSallys are in a squeeze. And of course, you would say to them, where you've been the last four years, John and Martha.

**James Carville** (4:27)
So tonight, as a friend of mine pointed out, the infection rate on just the White House campus at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue is currently 23 times the entire country of New Zealand.
