Amazon is releasing kids versions of its new Alexa tablets. More on that coming up, but first, Microsoft shed more light on its personal computing plans and what it's offering developers at a Windows and Surface event on Wednesday. Along with other announcements, we learn more about the company's vision for how AI agents that run locally may change how people use their PCs. The company showcased the Surface Laptop Ultra, a laptop that it teased earlier this year. It's said to be the most powerful Surface laptop yet, and it runs on NVIDIA's RTX Spark system-on-a-chip, SOC.
NVIDIA CEO Jensen Wong even appeared during the San Francisco event for a chat with Microsoft counterpart Satya Nadella. During the event, much of which was surprisingly developer-focused, Microsoft hammered home that it's working to make Windows the most secure platform for AI agents. The company also talked about a hybrid approach to AI that runs both locally and in the cloud. Head over to engadget.com as Chris Holt breaks down everything announced at Microsoft's Window and Surface event.
And when we first caught a glimpse of the Surface Laptop Ultra back in June, we were struck by how normal it seemed. Even though Microsoft claimed it was the most powerful Surface Laptop ever, it really looked like a straightforward MacBook Pro clone, even more so than the Surface Laptop or the Laptop Studio, which nobody talks about anymore. There aren't any weird hinges or flashy Surface features, just pure premium laptop by the looks of it. After spending a bit of time with it, we can confirm that remains the case. At the same time, it feels better than any other Windows laptop we've held before, and given its $2,599 starting price, it damn well better be. Find Devendra Hardwar's full hands-on review of the Surface Laptop Ultra right now at engadget.com.
The low price of Amazon's old Fire tablets made them an extremely popular gift for children, so it's only natural the company would make kid-friendly versions of its new Android-based Alexa tablets.
The newly-announced Amazon Kids tablets feature the same improvements the company is bringing to the rest of its tablet lineup, but with colorful cases, kid-appropriate software, and one year of Amazon Kids Plus.
Amazon Kids tablets come in an 8.7-inch size that lines up with the Alexa Tablet 8 and an 11-inch size that lines up with the Alexa Tablet 11 Both tablets feature the all-aluminum design Amazon is introducing on the rest of this tablet generation, along with an unnamed 8-core processor and up to 14 hours of video playback on the Amazon Kids Tablet 8 and 15 hours on the Kids Tablet 11 To make the tablets kids safe, Amazon is also wrapping them in a case. The company is offering a soft bumper case with a handle for children ages 3 and up, or a slim hard case with a folding kickstand for children ages 6 and up. Both cases come in bright colors, and the cases for younger kids include theming based on popular franchises like Paw Patrol and Barbie. In terms of software, Amazon includes easy access to Alexa for kids and a new dynamic tab that recommends content for children based on their age range. With the bundled Kids Plus subscription, that'll include a variety of ad-free books, shows, and games, along with a new feature Amazon calls Story Builder that's supposed to let kids use their voice to create illustrated stories. Because this is an Android tablet, kid-friendly apps from the Play Store are also theoretically available. The Amazon Kids Tablet 8 and Kids Tablet 11 will be available to purchase on October 14th for $230 and $330 respectively. That makes the tablets affordable, though not nearly as cheap as Amazon's past Fire Kids tablets, which regularly started at $100.
