Alright, big news out of New York. The Rangers just awarded the Lars-Erik Sjoberg Award to defenseman Alberts Smits. This award goes to the top rookie in Training Camp, as decided by the media. He's also rocking number 12, which is a classic number for the team. At just 18, Smits is making history as the highest drafted Lapland player in NHL history going fifth overall in the 2026 draft. That's a big one for the Latvian hockey scene, no doubt. He steps into the shoes of former Ranger Connor Mackey, who wore number 12 last season. Smits impressed everyone during Training Camp and the preseason, thanks to his professional play and demeanor. He's joining recent teen talents like Kaia Polkako and Alexis Lafreniere, both of whom made their NHL debuts right after being drafted. It's all about that young talent, right?

He's currently slotted in the third pairing alongside Braden Schneider, signaling just how highly the team thinks of him. Smits put up some solid numbers in League of last season, posting the second most points for players under 18, definitely opens the door for a breakout season. Looking ahead, Smits is set to make his NHL debut at the Rangers opener against the Boston Bruins on September 29th. The anticipation is real, and with his skill and youth, he just might become a key player for the Rangers this season.
