It's September 28th. Welcome in. This is New York Rangers News Today, where team coverage meets AI.
All right, big news from the New York Rangers today. Alberts Šmits is officially on the opening night roster after an impressive training camp. It's a major step for him, and he'll be hitting the ice for his first NHL game against the Boston Bruins this Tuesday. The Rangers picked Šmits fifth overall in the 2026 draft, and they really believe he was ready to go. Turns out, he's proving them right by making the cut right out of camp. That's a big one for sure. During camp, Mitz practiced with the main NHL group the whole time, showing he can hold his own against some veteran players.
He's been paired mostly with Braden Schneider on the third defensive unit, which is promising for his development. Gotta have that support, right? Any doubts about him starting the season in the American Hockey League were quickly squashed by his solid performances. He even logged over 23 minutes in one of the preseason games, which definitely speaks volumes about his readiness. That kind of experience is huge, so the Rangers are rolling with a defenseman as they kick off the new season.
It'll be exciting to see how Mitz adapts to the NHL, and how he carries this momentum into his rookie year.
