Mr. Chairman, on the vote of those present, the yeas are eight and the nays are five. On the vote by proxy and for the record only, the yeas are zero, the nays are two, and the motion is agreed to.

And with that party line vote, the Senate Homeland Security Committee moved to hold Dr. Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress on Thursday.

Committee Chairman Rand Paul said prior to the vote, We're voting on whether a witness who has received the benefit of a sweeping federal pardon can be ordered by this committee to answer questions and then defy that order without consequence.

Fauci was the nation's top infectious disease doctor before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Senator Paul subpoenaed him to appear at a hearing last week to provide answers, and he did appear, but he did not cooperate. Republicans say that because former President Joe Biden gave him a preemptive pardon, Fauci was in no danger of prosecution and therefore had no right to provide only one answer to every question more than 100 times.

On the advice of council, I respectfully declined to answer based upon my rights under the Fifth Amendment to the Constitution.

But Democrats on the panel argue that he was within his rights to do so. Chairman Rand Paul is bypassing the typical step of sending the contempt resolution to the full Senate, where Democrats would likely filibuster. He is instead sending the contempt referral directly to the Department of Justice. It is now up to the DOJ whether to prosecute.
Iran says it is in the final stage of drafting an agreement with Oman to allow commercial traffic to use specific routes safely through the Strait of Hormuz. If Tehran and Oman complete the agreement, the White House says the US and Iran could then begin nuclear talks. President Trump is cautiously optimistic, but Democrats on Capitol Hill? Not so much. Senator Chris Murphy says he sees a clear pattern.

Trump says a deal is about to happen, don't worry, the war is about to be over. There's no deal.

Vice President JD. Vance answered critics saying it is a complicated process.

Number one, the Iranians are extraordinarily difficult people. Number two, they have a fractured system. So there are people within their system who want the war to be over. There are also people within their system who are crazy radicals who want the war to continue.

Meantime in Yemen, the Iran backed Houthi rebels reportedly attacked government forces in two provinces, killing at least 30 troops. The attack marks a major escalation since a truce in 2022 largely halted the fighting. The civil war pits the Houthis against a Saudi-led coalition allied with Yemen's globally recognized government.
Two African nations are stepping up to help keep the peace in the postwar Gaza Strip. World's Mary Muncie reports.

Authorities in Uganda want approval from Parliament Thursday to deploy troops to Gaza. That will be part of an international force proposed by President Trump's Board of Peace to secure the territory in the aftermath of Israel's war with the terror group Hamas. Morocco has also pledged troops for the mission. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is clarifying an announcement out of Washington. The Trump administration said that Israel and Hamas had reached a deal that calls for Hamas to disarm, while Israel halts its strikes and begins withdrawing from much of Gaza. But Netanyahu said this week that Hamas has to completely disarm first, before any Israeli withdrawal can begin.

The World Health Organization says Congo's Ebola outbreak is spreading faster than health workers can track it. And in some places, cases are doubling. It is the fastest growing Ebola outbreak ever, having infected nearly 4,000 people and killed more than 1,800. The United States has put more than a half billion dollars into the response. But in the province, with nine out of every ten cases, health workers walked off the job on Thursday. They say the government hasn't paid them since the outbreak was declared in May.
