When it comes to New Year's resolutions, a lot of us shoot for the stars. We come up with super ambitious goals and then abandon them once reality sets in. So is there a better approach? These three books offer a unique perspective. In Big Goals, executive coach Caroline Adams Miller critiques popular thinking about goal setting. One of these is the popular Smart Goals Framework. She says it can encourage low goals without enough guidance to determine whether the goals are good idea to begin with. Instead, Miller suggests an approach grounded in psychological research. Science says the most effective goals are both challenging and specific, and can be categorized as either performance goals or learning goals. In Tiny Experiments, neuroscientist Anne-Laure Le Cunff argues that traditional goal-setting methods are too linear and promote fear and isolation. She says we can replace rigid timelines with fluid experimentation by making three mental shifts, from anxiety to curiosity, from fixed ladders to growth loops, and from outcome to process. In his book Reset, author Dan Heath writes about effective ways to make progress when traditional methods just aren't working. He talks a lot about finding leverage points or places where just a little bit of effort can yield big results, and then reallocating your resources like time, energy and money to maximize those results.
