Ebro Darden (1:31)

Running for Senate of Michigan. But they treat you like you're running for President of the United States. You know that, right?

Abdul El-Sayed (1:39)

Well, here's the thing about it.

I'm running for Senate of Michigan. But when the President of the United States decides that he wants to say your name at every speech he gives, at some point, I'm like, go ahead, build me a platform, my guy. That's what you want to do. Go ahead.

Peter Rosenberg (1:51)

He thought he could weaponize your name. Like, your name would scare people so much that it's a good one for him to throw out.

Ebro Darden (1:57)

What's crazy is they've tried to play how many times now? They tried it with Barack, they lost. Tried them at Zoran, they lost.

Peter Rosenberg (2:04)

Barack Hussein Obama.

Abdul El-Sayed (2:05)

Right. They tried.

Peter Rosenberg (2:06)

He thinks if he says that enough, people will stop liking Obama.

Abdul El-Sayed (2:08)

And the funny thing about it is, you know, it's funny, because I made fun of the way he says my name, right? When he says my first name, he holds on to the L a little bit too long.

Peter Rosenberg (2:15)

Abdul.

Abdul El-Sayed (2:16)

He goes, Abdul. I'm like, he's a little too, it's creepy, man.

So I made fun of this and now he doesn't say my last name at all. He's like, that guy from Michigan, El-Sayed.

But I mean, they don't understand, this is the thing about Trump, is that Trump, he didn't realize that his essential narcissism created a space where he needs attention. It turns out attention is what you need in politics. He didn't realize what he was doing, he was just doing it. And so it's funny because he actually has no idea how he succeeded. And he doesn't realize that he's just giving me more of a platform. Every time the president of the United States says your name, he's elevating you. Go ahead. Give me more attention. And you want me to talk about gas prices you made higher, the fact that nobody can afford the groceries because of the war you're fighting, the fact that nobody can see a doctor because you haven't done anything about health care if anything, you've made it worse. The fact that right now we're wasting our money on bombs rather than on schools. I'm gonna keep talking about those things. So go ahead. Let me talk about them from the biggest possible platform that you are making fun of.

Peter Rosenberg (3:25)

He's also made you like this, by making you this enemy of the right. What I've really enjoyed about your campaign is that that has allowed you to now step into the Wolves' Den with, you know, on Fox News.

And not enough people are confident as Democrats to sit there and talk to Fox News. And you seem to thrive in that spot, which is a great place for you to be.

Abdul El-Sayed (3:51)

Well, here's the thing, right? This is, I think, what everybody hates about our politics, particularly younger folk. We grew up in a time where the internet feeds you slop all day, every day. So you're really good at seeing slop for slop.
