All right, let us say hello to Jay Alderete, the 19-year-old prospect. A lot of people have their eye on coming off the biggest win of his career against UFC vet Cameron Smotherman this past weekend at Fury FC 121, and this fight got a lot of attention. It was chaotic during, more chaotic after. Let's talk to Jay now about the whole thing. Jay, how are you, sir?
**Jay Alderete** (0:26)
I'm doing good. How are you, brother?
**Mike Heck** (0:29)
I'm doing good.
What a wild night in Houston against Cameron. So much to break down and discuss from this fight. But before we get into any of that, you're 19, you're 6 and as a pro fighter, and looking at your resume, Cam's name obviously is the one that stands out here, is the big step up in competition, and it's the color green on all of the Fight Finder pages. What does that mean to you so early in your career to knock off a UFC veteran?
**Jay Alderete** (0:59)
I love it, man. It's great because I really, I've been asking for a step up in competition since like my second pro fight, you know what I mean? And then I actually had an opportunity to fight a step up against like a four and one or five and one guy.
And I mean, he pulled out two weeks before, so it was just one of the things where everybody had a, they had something to say about the guys that I fought before and I'm like, dude, I'm waiting for the step up. And sure enough, it was Cam, man. And that was, it was, it feels amazing to knock that dude off the list.
**Mike Heck** (1:36)
You know, it must mean you're doing something right if everyone's saying, everyone's giving you crap about the level of opposition. That means a lot of people have their eye on you, right?
**Jay Alderete** (1:44)
Oh, for sure, for sure. Dude, the fight fans are insane.
**Mike Heck** (1:50)
And you don't even know the half of it yet. So you'll see. You know, you'll see as you keep on. But I think I think most people saw the aftermath. They saw the submission, the post fight craziness for sure.
And I being as inquisitive and curious of a cat as I am, I have a million questions. So let's start here.
**Jay Alderete** (2:09)
Ask away. I got a lot of answers for you.
**Mike Heck** (2:12)
Before the fight, before the fight actually happens and you go through all the normal fight week hubbub and I've never covered a Fury FC event live. So I'm not really sure how it works. And I'm sure there's weigh ins and there's media and interviews heading into all of these fights. And there's bulletin board material. Like, were you guys, were you guys cool heading into the fight? Like obviously there's going to be competitive heat because you're trying to punch each other in the face in a cage. But was there any sort of ugliness, any sort of extra heat added on prior to you guys actually walking to the cage?
**Jay Alderete** (2:45)
Yeah, so actually leading in to the fight, when I first found out about the fight, and he found out about it as well, everyone's hitting us up for interviews, podcasts, leading in to the fight for Fury Media and all that stuff. So I'm doing all my interviews, all my podcasts, showing him and his team that I respect. You know, I respect him, I respect the resume, everything he's done in the sport. I watched him come up. Him on the other hand, whenever he's doing all his podcasts, he's talking that hot shit. Like, oh, I haven't watched any film on him. I know he's a kid. I'ma smack this.
You know what I'm saying?
He's, I gotta get this monkey off my back. And he's just saying like, it's gonna be an easy fight. And he's just gonna come from a point. And I'm just like, bro, you gotta hold another thing coming for you, dog. I'ma show you levels to the game. And dude, he does another interview, talking all this shit. And then they play it before the fight, right before I walk out. And I never even saw this interview yet. The UFC Fight Pass plays it.
And I'm about to walk out and I'm like, I'm getting hype, you know? And I see that shit and I was like, oh, let's go. That just turned me up a notch. So the energy was just like, 10 times higher through the roof than what it was whenever I walked out. And I beat the shit out of him. I mean, even at face-offs, he was talking shit, telling me like, he's going to do a lot of people a favor, knocking me off the list.
