Your True Halloween Stories IV Part 1
Astonishing Legends
October 11, 2026
In 1933, a Scottish botanist watched a seemingly abandoned steamship drift past the Alaskan coast on an ice floe. It appeared upside down in a strange mirage, with no crew and no one at the wheel. This ship was the Baychimo, which was abandoned two years earlier, but refused to disappear.

A few years ago, in the old part of a town in the north of England, a district nurse led himself and a nurse he was training into a patient's house for a fairly routine wellness check and visit. On that day, both the nurse and the trainee saw someone else at this house, but their patient lived alone.
More recently, in Idaho Falls, Idaho, a woman store manager started seeing small, dark figures in her house, always at the edge of her sight, never straight on, and it got worse through months of nights alone while her husband worked. Over a long lunch, the business owner and her manager tried to work out what the figures were, and shortly after that, something decided to answer one of their questions, and did it in a way they could not explain.
In the late 1980s, in a new three-bedroom house in Southern Oregon, a mother tucked her little girl into her first big kid bed, a waterbed, left the door open about an inch, and left the hall light on for comfort. The little girl liked the stripe of light around the door, and she'd fall asleep looking at it. As she tells it, she woke one night to the door moving. The house had gone completely quiet. The light went out, and that stripe went with it, and in the dark that came in around the door, something was moving.

Toward her room, toward her.
Forrest Burgess (1:41)
Something so bright it hurt the look at it. It rushed toward her. It would be back, many, many times.
Tonight, three listeners tell you those stories themselves. Luke, Christina and Jennifer join us to personally share encounters that defy explanation. This is the fourth installment of a long-running tradition at Astonishing Legends, Your True Halloween Stories, and it's October, so buckle up.
Scott Philbrook (2:25)
Welcome back to Astonishing Legends, I'm Scott Philbrook and this is our listener, Jennifer.
Jennifer (2:31)
It left behind a darkness that seemed to whirl like ink drops in water, sending smoke-like tendrils around the door and into my room.
Scott Philbrook (2:40)
Join us tonight as we sit down with three of our listeners to hear their own true Halloween stories.
SPEAKER_4 (2:58)
And we're back.
Scott Philbrook (3:00)
That we are, folks, and it's good to be back. Welcome to the spooky season.
Forrest Burgess (3:04)
For us and many of our listeners, one of our favorite times of the year. And I have a feeling that we'll be back to the spooky season.
SPEAKER_4 (3:09)
I know.
Forrest Burgess (3:09)
And I have a feeling this one's gonna be especially weird. Don't know how exactly. Just kind of a gut thing. I mean, last year was tough, and it's been a tough year, but we're all together still, and that really inspires and uplifts me.
Scott Philbrook (3:22)
Well, there you go. And I'm fresh back from Tess' wedding, which was amazing. She is currently honeymooning in France, and we're thrilled for her. She says she's still got blog Astonishing going this year, which I'm not sure how she's doing that, other than that she's amazing. But that's one new blog entry of a cool story for every day of the month in October. And I can tell you that so far, they're all showing up as they should, even though she is rightfully out of pocket.
Forrest Burgess (3:48)
Yeah, you know, just for the record, I will state that we were gonna let her skip this year. I mean, that's too much.
You don't have to do it every year, Tess. I know, but she has a lot of passion for it. She feels dedicated and responsible for our listeners' entertainment and edification. And so she mustered on. But seriously, just go enjoy your honeymoon and your croissant and whatever else you're having right now.
Scott Philbrook (4:11)
Well, here's the other thing. Pretty soon, like every October, you're going to be able to pre-order a very special, limited run, glow-in-the-dark zip-up hoodie this year for Halloween that has unique artwork that we've never done before.
Forrest Burgess (4:25)
That's right, folks. The tradition continues. And this year's hoodie is especially cool. It's not quite in the store yet, but it will be soon. And once it's up, we'll run an announcement in an episode and you'll be able to pre-order them up until midnight, Sunday, October 25th.
Scott Philbrook (4:41)
Right, so the goal is, and we've done this before, is to only produce what actually gets purchased and then to hopefully get them all shipped out in time for you to have them by Halloween. Now be warned, if you order near the end of the run, like close to the 25th, they might not make it before Halloween if there are any shipping hiccups, but we will do our spooky best. This one is so cool this year, by the way. It harkens back to our collector set of glasses and that it's based on a character image of a creature from the show's past, but not one we've ever done before. It may be in the story by the time this episode is posted, but if it's not, it'll be there within a few days of that. And remember, they will all be getting printed just before their ship, so don't expect them immediately after you order. Be patient and just know we're going to try to get them to you before Halloween.
