We see it, there are a lot of people on the internet now who profess to be experts. And I'm like, you film yourself exercising your own workout in a commercial gym. You don't even own a gym. You don't even have a garage gym. You know, and that's fine. But I'm like, I never see you coach. I never see what your athletes look like moving. I never see the teams you work with. I never see the places you've been. I never see, like, you need to show us your work now.
Hailey (0:24)
Hi everyone, my name is Hailey. And this is Laura. And welcome to The Body Pod.
Here we go, Juliet and Kelly, welcome to The Body Pod.
Juliet Starrett (0:38)
Thank you so much for having us. And as we said in the pre-roll, I already feel like I know you guys and it's been too long. We should have done this sooner.
Kelly Starrett (0:48)
We should have done this sooner. And do you even need a token man on this podcast at all?
Juliet Starrett (0:53)
Oh yeah. We do, we need you. You're here for the humor.
You're bringing the humor.
Kelly Starrett (0:57)
Everyone needs to lift something heavy. You still don't need me.
Hailey (1:03)
Well, I will say, our Power Happens group that I run with Stacey, every time we get on there, and people ask me all the time, they're like, what is the five minute Ready State mobility routine that Stacey recommended? Said in one of the Zooms, I don't even know which one. And people still are like, Hailey, what's the... I'm like, I don't know.
Let me get them on a podcast and ask them the question.
Juliet Starrett (1:34)
That's a great question, because we probably don't know the answer to that either, given that we've probably made 10,000 videos over the years. So it is hard when someone's like, what's that one video you guys made?
I don't know. My guess is maybe it's either the couch stretch or the hip spin up. That would be one of our... Those would probably be our two videos. If I was going to...
Kelly Starrett (1:54)
Yeah, for sure. If I was going to point at people at two pieces of content, something like a movement practice that you could do in the morning, no equipment wherever you are that will make it easier for you to move into the thing you're doing, the ready state hip spin up or our shoulder spin up. And the idea is we were going to try to create a, like a sun salutation for athletes that touch some key shapes. And then even if you didn't touch those shapes the rest of the day, at least you've touched them once. Like you flossed once, so you're good to go. So that's where I'd point people.
But I think underlying that, the question you were going to say is that which part of the body is not important.
Juliet Starrett (2:31)
Yeah. So that's what I think I was going to add to the conversation is Kelly, a lot of people are like, okay, Kelly, so if there was one mobilization to do for the rest of your life, and Kelly always responds by saying, okay, so like which one of your kids do you love the most? Or what's the equivalent, Kelly's like, which part of your body do you not care about? So that's always a hard question for Kelly to answer because obviously you need all the parts of your body to function. It's a big system of systems.
Kelly Starrett (3:00)
Do you want to have Ricketts or Scurvy?
Juliet Starrett (3:02)
Yeah, I mean, it's like one of those. So that's always a hard question to answer, but I'm always willing to answer it because what Kelly and I talk about at the dinner table when we're by ourselves because it's super romantic, it's hip extension, other people.
Kelly Starrett (3:15)
I can't believe you're just spilling our love language.
Juliet Starrett (3:16)
Yeah, and we just talk about how nobody has any of it, like nobody has hip extension in the world, and nine times out of 10 when people spend a lot of money and time flying to see Kelly because they have X, Y, or Z problem, their problem is hip extension. If we work with youth athletes, 100% of them have no hip extension, so Kelly's remiss to say one thing, but I'm gonna say the one thing is everybody listening to this is lacking hip extension, and you should work on it.
Hailey (3:47)
Okay, I'm kind of blown away right now because I would have said, like ankle mobility would be the thing that I see in the squat, but tell me why.
