But Proverbs 3, verses 5 through 7, probably some of the more famous verses in the Bible. And really, you could preach these verses from just about every service, and it would still solidify, as Christians, exactly what we need to do to serve the Lord.
Here in Proverbs 3, Solomon is writing to his son, and he says, and God speaks through him and says this, Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes. Fear the Lord and depart from evil. Let's just read those one more time. Trust in the Lord with all thine heart, and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Be not wise in thine own eyes. Fear the Lord and depart from evil. We've covered these verses before, but like I said, we can cover them again and again, because this is exactly, this is really living for Christ in a nutshell. Trusting him, acknowledging his ways, and finding his direction. And so here's our title tonight. Before we get started, you will follow who you trust. You will follow who you trust. So let's pray and ask the Lord's help. Dear Heavenly Father, we do come before you tonight, and Lord, I ask for your help. I pray, Lord, that I would be trusting in you, dependent upon you, and Lord, I pray that you would speak through your word, help us to be faithful. I pray, Lord, that you would guide and direct us, give us the wisdom and direction that we need. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen.
There's a phrase that we might use sometimes, talking to someone else. It's okay, I got this. All right, how many of you use that? I've got this. Just slow down. All right, all right. When we first got married, I most likely really got on Miss Jessie's nerves because I was always hovering around the kitchen. Now, I enjoy cooking. I enjoy food and doing that. But when we first got married, I was a little OCD or CDO. That's OCD in alphabetical order or just maybe a little bit overbearing. And she'd be in there cooking, and I would be over there hovering over her, making sure she was putting this spice in and doing this. And you say, Pastor, you needed to grow up. Yes, I did. And hopefully I've improved a little bit. But I was trying to make sure she was cooking it right. And while I wanted to help, part of the problem was I didn't trust her like I should have. I wanted it to turn out the way that I wanted to turn out, and I wasn't being very trusting in that. And so I was trying to keep my fingers in the pot and keep an eye on that. And eventually she's told me, it's okay.
I got this.
I know how to cook, and as I backed off and did so, I realized, oh, she does. And I just began to trust it, and Miss Jessie is an amazing cook. There was some growing up that this guy needed to do.
And we can laugh at that, and I hope that comes across somewhat humorous in some of that it was intended to.
But I'm afraid that sometimes in our lives, spiritually speaking, we can be looking over God's shoulders.
Not literally, but there's God's plans, but sometimes we can be, proverbially, if I can say that right, in this way, looking over God's shoulders and trying to put our finger in the pie and trying to make sure that God's plans are coming out the way we want them to come out. And we're trying to maybe manipulate circumstances or put our opinion into it. Why? Because sometimes we don't trust God, that God really has our best interests at heart.
Sometimes we can be trying to get our way or trying to manipulate or praying, Lord, I really want you to do this, because it comes down to this. Sometimes we don't trust God the way that we should. Sometimes we don't trust that God's way is actually best.
Well, we might ask this, why is trusting God so important? Okay, how many would say this? We're just saying, tis so sweet to trust in Jesus. I mean, we're here tonight on a Wednesday night. I believe everyone in this room would say, it's important to trust God. I trust God, I want to trust him more.
We know we need to trust God, but how does it work in our life? And what are the benefits of trusting God? And what are the problems that come when we don't trust God?
