Ladies and gentlemen, happy Monday. Welcome to Yesterday's News. Recover Yesterday's News in 15 to 20 minutes. This will cover the weekend, so it might be a little bit on the longer side. As always, the goal of this is to help you stay informed, maybe a little less time on social media, a little more time in your life, and to keep focused as we head into November. On this day, October 5th, 1988, Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy. 50 million people watched the vice presidential debate in Omaha. Dan Quayle, 41, had been told by his handlers not to compare himself to John F. Kennedy. He did it anyway. He said, quote, I have as much experience in Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency, end quote. Lloyd Benson, 67, had been waiting for that. He said, Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy. The hall erupted. Quayle's ticket won anyway. By 315 electoral votes, he was the price vice president for four years. The line outlived his career, however. John Kennedy says he'd run against goobers. Cruz calls Vance insecure and Vance says Cruz is already running. Asked by Kristen Welker on Sunday whether he is thinking about running for president, Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana said, Yeah, his condition on my side of the aisle, if a bunch of goobers run and I think they're goobers and one of the goobers might win, and I think I could do a better job, I would consider running. He declined to say whether the vice president is a goober, said, I'm not going to talk about another potential candidate. I'm just not there yet. The exchange he was declining to join in had already started. Vice President Vance told NBC, it was really obvious to me that at this very moment, Ted Cruz is running for president. Cruz answered Saturday, in my experience, people engage in political bomb throwing when they're feeling insecure. He said he is focused on midterms. The midterms are 30 days away. The president's disapproval in AP polling is 69 percent. The men who would succeed him have started positioning before votes that will define his second term have been counted. In Ohio, Trump says he'll do less for the state if elected Democrats instead of Republicans and tells voters to pretend it's him on the ballot. At a rally in Valdalia outside of Dayton on Saturday, the president campaigned for Senator John Houston in a gubernatorial nominee Vivek Ramaswamy. He called Democrats dumb sons of bitches. Can you believe that this is our political rhetoric now?
Can you believe this? Could you imagine if somebody said something like this in the 90s?
He told the crowd the Republican control would give Ohio a direct line to his administration for federal help and that if Democrats win, he would be less inclined to work with the state. He told voters even if you hate John Houston, even if you hate Vivek Ramaswamy, you're going to go out and you're going to vote. He told them to vote as though his own name were on the ballot. A president conditioning federal assistance to a state on its election results is the arrangement he made with Argentina last October when he said the 20 billion currency swap depended on Malay's party winning.
Argentina's poverty rate is now rising. Ohio's diesel is 650 gallon. The three ads airing the Ohio State games this month, including one that his 2024 campaign spot, The Oval Office, is now in the top 10 Carrie, the disclaimer paid for by the US government. Psychologically, I need it. Trump's aspirin monologue at a photo that alarmed his own supporters. In the same speech, the president, who's now 80, said, I take an aspirin a day. I don't know if it works, but psychologically, I need it. He described the dose as a monster and said doctors had urged him to cut back and he had declined. The remarks came in a stretch of speech that even friendly observers described as rambling. Photographs of his return to the White House afterward, which circulated widely on Sunday, showed him slumped in his seat, eyes closed, apparently struggling to hold his head up. Nothing, he said, amounted to a new diagnosis and the White House released no medical information. The ad his government is paying to air shows him striding down a hallway in black and white. House Republicans are in triage mode, Nancy Mays said. The midterms are going to be an effing bloodbath. CNN reported that House Republican leadership has moved from trying to hold the majority to trying to limit the size of the Democratic one with a target of keeping the margin under 10 seats. Money is being pulled from races now considered loss. Among the seats reportedly being left behind, Marionette Miller Meeks in Ohio, Tom Keen in New Jersey and an open seat in Nebraska. Internal polling shows the president underwater in reliably Republican territory. Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina said it plainly, the midterms are going to be an effing bloodbath and we all know why. The reasons cited by Republicans themselves are diesel inflation and the war. Those are the president's policies. The strategy is to spend his last month before the vote telling voters in Ohio to pretend he's the candidate. Trump, Obama is quote, the most corrupt president in history. The other is Richard Nixon. On Sunday, the president posted side by side portraits of Barack Obama and Richard Nixon to Truth Social with the caption, one of these men is the most corrupt president in history of the United States. The other is Richard Nixon. It followed Wednesday's report that his Justice Department Office of Professional Responsibility is reviewing whether the Watergate special prosecutors mistreated Nixon. This is crazy. This is absolutely bollocks insane. But this is the world that we live in.
