The Carton Show with Craig Carton & Chris McMonigle
October 9, 2026
The Yankees season is over, and C-Mac is sounding off from Yankee Stadium as another visiting team celebrates on the field. Chris fumes over Aaron Boone batting Trent Grisham leadoff, Max Fried failing to get one more out, the fan interfering with Anthony Volpe's deep fly ball, and much more.

And Go Get'em we shall.
Welcome to the final Go Get'em of the 2026 New York Yankee season as they were swept and beat handily in every which way over the course of three games against the Tampa Bay Rays who celebrated a division title right here on this field. And now they will celebrate and are in the middle of celebrating down in the visitors clubhouse a ALDS victory, a decisive sweep of the New York Yankees. And there's a lot of things to be mad about. The first thing to me, I hope everyone, like I really do, I hope everybody who's very high on the idea that the best hitter can't hit lead off, that Ben Rice shouldn't be hitting lead off, that he hits too many solo homeruns, that you need someone to hit lead off. Now I know you wouldn't have chosen Trent Grisham, nor would I, and I still can't believe the Yankee manager Aaron Boone did. But this is why, right? I don't know if Ben Rice hits a homerun, if Ben Rice gets on base, if Ben Rice doesn't do the same thing, that Trent Grisham didn't strike out. But that game doesn't have to end on a Trent Grisham at bat. Like that's the first thing on my mind. We'll get to everything that happened in this game, everything that happened in this series. I guess we'll pick a shill in shame for this disgusting series. It's gonna be hard to find a shill.
But what's on the forefront of my mind is Trent Grisham, who yes, I have defended and I still thought he should be in the lineup, just not the leadoff hitter. Ben Rice should have been the leadoff hitter. And I know you wanted to tweak it and they did. And Anthony Volpe came in and played his ass off. And I guess, you know, we'll talk about that home run. I'm so disgusted. I got to be honest, I didn't even see that many replays. I just saw the replays here at the stadium. I didn't even want to go on my phone and look at all the different angles and replays. But obviously, I mean, in 96, Jeffrey Mayer, it's a home run. Yankees win a championship. In 2026, nothing goes their way. And they didn't deserve anything to go their way. And their performance in Game 2 eliminated all the right they had to any luck. All the right they had to any luck. But there were a handful of hard hit balls. Obviously, it looks like, I know Ryan, my producer, told me that Statcast has it as a ball that would be out of Yankee Stadium. I have no idea. In the stadium, bias of being a Yankee fan. Obviously, I'm willing to cop to that. It looked like that's not something I would overturn. I know home runs aren't necessarily the same thing as outs and saves on the base bats as far as keeping it the call. But it was called a home run. I didn't see definitive evidence. Maybe there is. It doesn't matter. It didn't count as a home run. They lose and Trent Grisham has the last at bat of the season because it's real important to make sure guys are on base in front of Ben Rice. I hope once and for all we could put to bed that stupid argument because the fact of the matter is things like this can happen where you have a runner on or you have a rally with two outs. The bottom of the order gets on and you turn the over to a lesser. You turn the line up over to a lesser hitter because the one you hope that he gets a base hit in the first inning. Like it's just stupid. And the manager made a stupid decision in putting Trent Grisham and Lidoff. It absolutely killed them today.
A lot of things killed them today. And they did show some fight and they scored runs every time the Rays scored runs. Three isn't nearly enough, but they did show a little bit of fight. They played a clean game. Max Fried was not good enough. Plain and simple. Max Fried was not good enough. He was one out away from having the bare minimum of a start we needed from Max Fried, which would have been six innings, two runs. He was one out away from it. He got two easy outs in the inning. He gives up the base hit on a bullet up the middle, and then he gives up the home run to Mesa Jr. A home run you cannot give up. Not if you're Max Fried, not if you're getting paid the money getting paid, not if you're one of the aces of this staff, not if you're a guy the Yankees are going to rely on to make sure they don't lose games like this. And he hangs a slider and gets beat. Not good enough from Max Fried, not good enough from this offense, not good enough from this manager, not good enough from anyone who, Brian Cashman who put the team together. Aaron Judge not being here is not an excuse. Not when you get beat like this, not when you lose three straight, not when you can't get off the deck and win a game at home to send it to game four and at least give yourself a chance with a little momentum. They never led in this game.
