The Carton Show with Craig Carton & Chris McMonigle

July 28, 2026

The Yankees escaped with a wild win, but Craig Carton and Chris McMonigle aren’t letting them off easy. The guys break down Anthony Volpe’s bizarre night, sloppy defense, the bullpen’s heroics, and how the Yankees managed to stay in the playoff race despite plenty of mistakes.
Speakers: Chris McMonigle, Craig Carton
**Chris McMonigle** (0:01)
The Yankees win.

**Craig Carton** (0:02)
Here comes Bednar now.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:03)
Well, that's the problem.

**Craig Carton** (0:04)
Have to come into the game, gotta save everyone's ass.

**Chris McMonigle** (0:07)
Two things that bothered me about it, obviously. One, now you have to pitch Bednar, right? You had to bring him up, he got one at bat, he strikes out the final hitter of the game, it sucks, you have to bring him into the game. Now, I don't know if he's available tonight because of that, that drop affects moving forward because Bednar, now I don't know how he's available to pitch. But number two, and more importantly to me, Volpe had a really good game, Volpe played well, he made a big time defensive play up the middle, he got on base a couple of times, even when Volpe is playing well, and tonight he's back in the line up at shortstop, no Caballero, and you know what?
It's probably the right move, Caballero sucks offensively, Volpe's been swinging the bat better, but it's got to be something with this kid, he can't just have a crisp clean game, play well, he makes the throw on the relay, it wasn't a great throw with a lot of strength, it rolled up there practically, but he got to play at the plate, like Anthony Volpe had a good game, and now that's what it's known for, and he doesn't just drop the pop up, he's got to fall on his ass, and look like he's, it's unbelievable, Schumann and Leffield the same thing, like they have a tendency of not just mismanaging the play, it makes it look so awful by falling on his ass afterwards, but again, if you think that bothers me, it doesn't, they won the baseball game.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:28)
I'm just trying to talk baseball with you, because that's all I'm trying to do.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:31)
They were down 3-0 with Max Fried on the mound.

**Craig Carton** (1:33)
And felt like it was over. Let's be honest, the way this offense has been, game was over.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:37)
Game was a wrap.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:38)
And they battled back. And they made mistake after mistake, it was a sloppy play, Jazz in the first inning, all he has to do is catch the ball and tag the runner, and he can't do that. You've got, even Jones in the outfield doesn't hustle on a base hit, and Vargas turns it into a double. There were mistakes all over the field.

**Craig Carton** (1:56)
A litany of mistakes.

**Chris McMonigle** (1:57)
All over the field. The only benefit is the offense actually showed up and the White Sox made more mistakes than they did.

**Craig Carton** (2:02)
Thank goodness for that.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:04)
But it was a win.

**Craig Carton** (2:04)
I'll be honest, a 3-0, click.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:06)
I thought the game was over.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:07)
100%. So did I.

**Craig Carton** (2:09)
The whole series against Philly was no offense.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:11)
Max Fried can only go three innings because he's still on a pitch count. He gave up three runs, and you know you're going to probably see the bottom end of the bullpen, but the story of the game is our offense came through and the bullpen continues to be great, despite the fact that I think they're still looking to go and prove it at the end of one.

**Craig Carton** (2:25)
And you stay two and a half games out.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:27)
Two and a half games out, well, they were three. They picked up half a game because...

**Craig Carton** (2:30)
I think you scoreboard watch it a little bit now, not crazy, a little bit.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:34)
A little bit.

**Craig Carton** (2:35)
Oh, come on, dude.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:36)
I'm scoreboard watching every second.

**Craig Carton** (2:37)
You're already scoreboard watching two months to go in the season?

**Chris McMonigle** (2:41)
Put it this way.

**Craig Carton** (2:42)
You're scoreboard watching the Tampa Bay's.

**Chris McMonigle** (2:44)
The Mets have been relegated to the third TV, and Tampa Bay is on the second TV.

**Craig Carton** (2:52)
Tampa's getting number two spotage?

**Chris McMonigle** (2:54)
Tampa Bay has overtaken the Mets on the scale of the TVs.
Wow. The Mets get the third TV?

**Craig Carton** (3:00)
Let me ask you a question.

**Chris McMonigle** (3:01)
Yes.

**Craig Carton** (3:02)
What could happen for the Mets to get no TV time? Is that on the table?

**Chris McMonigle** (3:07)
The Red Sox.

**Craig Carton** (3:08)
Red Sox winning? Yeah. Yankees main TV, Red Sox TV2, Tampa TV3. That's very possible. Sorry, Mets.
