Totally Football Show, European edition.
Today, nice to meet you. Borussia Dortmund's free-scoring Felix has them joint top of the table. We hear from Italy, there's CES, Catalan splaining at Como and the Old Lady vanishing. Spain, where La Masia is rolling out yet another teenage star. France, and we get into the wide open Ballon d'Or and it's very crowded lobby. It's The Totally Football Show. Monday, the 14th of September, it's a brand new Totally Football Show European edition. James Horncastle is with us. Hi, James.
James Horncastle (0:39)
Hello, James.
James Richardson (0:39)
So is Tom Williams.
Tom Williams (0:41)
Hello, James.
James Richardson (0:41)
We're joined from the continent by Pol Ballus, Pol.
Pol Ballus (0:44)
Hello, James.
James Richardson (0:46)
Seb Stafford-Bloor.
Seb Stafford-Bloor (0:47)
Hello, James.
James Richardson (0:49)
Hi. Tom, you were just saying about when you were a kid, you begged your parents to buy you a Heinz baked bean pizza.
Tom Williams (0:57)
We were talking about how annoying it is when you temporarily lose your-
James Richardson (1:01)
Sense of taste.
Tom Williams (1:02)
Taste.
Pol Ballus (1:03)
Some would argue that wanting-
Tom Williams (1:04)
Comment on the show yesterday. I wasn't going to say. Some would argue that wanting such a pizza in the first place was perhaps an indication that I had already lost my sense of taste. That might be good. But I begged my parents to get it for me. It was an official Heinz baked bean pizza.
Pol Ballus (1:18)
It was official then?
Tom Williams (1:19)
It was official. It was legit. It had the logo on.
Pol Ballus (1:23)
So what did it consist of?
Tom Williams (1:25)
It was a pizza with baked beans on, as basic as it sounds.
I'm like, can we please get the baked bean pizza? No, it looks disgusting. Then I fell ill and I think to try and cheer me up, they relented and they bought the Heinz baked bean pizza. But because I was ill, I couldn't taste it properly.
Pol Ballus (1:40)
Or maybe that's just how it tasted anyway.
Tom Williams (1:42)
Perhaps it is. But I remember having a very full on experience sitting there sobbing into my beanie pizza.
James Horncastle (1:49)
Wow. I'm so glad the beanie pizza hasn't reached Italy. Because given how they react about pineapple.
Tom Williams (1:55)
I mean, do they think?
James Horncastle (1:57)
Well, they do performatively. Yeah. Yeah.
James Richardson (2:01)
Who else is intrigued by the notion of a flatbread with Heinz official Heinz baked beans on top? Just me?
James Horncastle (2:08)
Yes.
James Richardson (2:09)
Thank you, Seb. Paul too.
James Horncastle (2:11)
Come on then.
Pol Ballus (2:13)
I mean, baked beans, I lived seven years in the UK, but it was one of the things that I could not get into. I mean, there's just no way that I'm just having this. And just the thought of having a baked beans pizza, I've tried to think like the worst things I've had in my mouth, but that should be on top of it. That would be on top of it.
Tom Williams (2:35)
Wow. Can we rank the other things?
Pol Ballus (2:40)
You put in your mouth, which are the worst. It's fine. You do a top 10 for next week, Paul. Yeah.
Good job.
James Horncastle (2:48)
Okay.
James Richardson (2:50)
But yes, thank you, Tom, for that.
James Horncastle (2:53)
You're welcome.
James Richardson (2:53)
Tom, by the way, Tom was joining us on our live show on Sunday, in which he... Who was it? Louis Dunck's shot.
Tom Williams (3:03)
Louis Dunck.
James Richardson (3:04)
Louis Dunck's Marvelous Goal, which you described as a son-tag-schuss.
Tom Williams (3:08)
Yes.
James Richardson (3:08)
A son-tag-schuss, Seb, eh?
Pol Ballus (3:11)
I asked him what that meant.
James Richardson (3:13)
And Tom opened a copy of his book, Do You Speak Football? What did you say, Tom?
Tom Williams (3:18)
Well, so in the book, I explain, I talk about the existence of the phrase, but I don't explain where it comes from. And I think I thought when I was writing the book that it was kind of self-explanatory, like it's kind of a Sunday thing. As it turns out...
James Richardson (3:31)
A Sunday goal is son-tag-schuss.
Tom Williams (3:33)
A Sunday shot.
James Richardson (3:34)
Sunday shot.
Tom Williams (3:34)
This expression exists in both Dutch and German. And as it turns out, and thanks to commenters on last night's pod...
James Richardson (3:43)
Odraki... Odradek 99
Tom Williams (3:46)
And there were a few others as well. Were there others? Really stirred the hornet's nest with this. It's because there is this idea in Germany, and I guess also in the Netherlands, that there's something lucky about Sunday. So a lucky person might be described as a Sunday child. Sunday's child. So a Sunday shot, shot that sails in from 35 yards from the big lummox of a centre back, is therefore a Sunday shot.
