Hello there. Welcome to WTA Weekly.
Well, we have a treat because we're in for a long one. When you have Vanch Vimani on the show, Vanch, how are you doing?
Vanch Vimani (2:30)
Hi Nick, yes, it's been a while since we last did one of these, so I'm excited to get into this Asian swing and race to the WTA Finals.
John Silk (2:40)
Now I'm going to say this now, I'm not sure how much either of us watched Beijing, let's be honest. It's not a great time zone for either of us, maybe slightly better for you.
Vanch Vimani (2:51)
It's not ideal, I will say, you know, most of it is happening in the middle of the night, but I did find myself waking up early at times and catching up, like I did watch a fair bit of Shiantek Martins, I went back and would watch replays or extended highlights, so I do feel somewhat caught up, especially because of how long it feels with these one and a half week masters, that it's kind of the quarter semis and finals were all in back to back days, and I was able to kind of catch a lot of it, because there wasn't a whole lot else happening in Beijing, especially once the men finished playing in the middle of the week.
John Silk (3:35)
Well, thank goodness they all had night sessions, so we could watch some of these.
So let's get into it. And we'll start with the results. And well, Qinwen Zheng is back, officially. We thought she might have been back at the US Open. She's definitely back now. She has won the title that she's dreamed of. And I have to say, Vanch, absolutely no surprise at all.
Vanch Vimani (4:03)
Yeah, I mean, I have to give you a lot of credit because you actually, I think you called us. I think you said after the US Open part that I think she's going to win one of these big Asian Swing events coming up. And I was completely on board with you because if you watch her play at the US Open coming from qualifying and the way she came back from those love five sets against both Keys and Xiontec. I mean, but this is a whole other level. She's really taking it up a notch. I mean, the way she finished this tournament from quarter semis and finals, she just seemed to get better and better as the week went on. And the way she just handled three very good opponents playing great tennis and Svidlina and Martins, and then the final against Andrej, which was the most impressive. So, no, she's really, really come on tough and it's, it's great to see because I think she definitely belongs at the top amongst the rest of the best players right now. And yeah, it was great to see her do it in China, where she seems to play her very best tennis, while either representing China or playing in China.
