A shit-eating grin on your face about a shit-eating grin. Have you ever heard that?
Scott Siepker (0:04)
Oh yeah, I've been accused of having that myself.
Mackenzie Edie (0:08)
Me too, I just never know when I'm walking around saying things in the world. Is that something I learned growing up in more of a rural part of the state, the country that I can say?
Scott Siepker (0:23)
I've actually never thought about breaking that term down for a second, now that I think about what the words, when they actually put... Yeah, that's not what you would look like if you were doing that. You know, yes, but I don't think most, I don't think any humans really would feel that way.
So I'm thinking if you have that grin, we mean it and you have a mischievous smile upon your face.
Mackenzie Edie (0:53)
You shouldn't be doing.
Scott Siepker (0:54)
Yes.
Mackenzie Edie (0:55)
You're eating shit and you're grinning about it.
Scott Siepker (0:57)
But I don't think anyone would grin while doing that, so I don't know. Maybe this is an archaic term at this point.
Mackenzie Edie (1:03)
Oh, well, I'm never going to retire it. And all of my archaic terms, I'm going to keep saying. Except, I don't know, when you, you know, you grew up in a place like we did, and I love it and I appreciate it, and I came back. You didn't yet.
And then I went to college, where there are all kinds of people, all kinds of cultures, all kinds of things that I hadn't experienced. And then I'm saying some of this stuff, and I got checked on it a few times. Because it's like, you can't say that. It's like, oh, I didn't even, I didn't even-
Scott Siepker (1:35)
Try that in a small town.
Mackenzie Edie (1:36)
Try that in a small town.
Scott Siepker (1:38)
Speaking of which, well, we don't have, I could go on for hours about this next subject, but we'll keep it here and tight into the cold open. But I, going back to my hometown last Friday, had my 25 year high school reunion, and it was very fun. Went to the football game for a while, got to see some of my classmates there.
I got to see my old guidance counselor, Dick Hogan, who was such an instrumental part of my youth and guiding me.
Mackenzie Edie (2:10)
Did you see that guy that walked in on you in the bathroom, or you walked in on and he told you to stay there?
Scott Siepker (2:14)
That was Father Brant, or that was Father Hart.
Mackenzie Edie (2:18)
Yeah, that was him.
Scott Siepker (2:19)
No, no, no, that was great school. This is high school. And I got to talk to some of the kids at Carroll High who are now doing the things I was doing when I was their age, like being an announcer on the microphone, getting a camera in your hands. And one of the kids who does Espenover, who is doing the microphone work, I said, oh, I'm so happy you're doing that.
Are you planning on getting into this? When you get older, he goes, actually, I think I'm going to go into astrophysics.
SPEAKER_3 (2:53)
And I said, okay, well, good for you.
Scott Siepker (2:57)
But then we went to the Country Club, our Carroll National, Nick Nurse owns it now, guest of the show, and got to hang out with. We had about 30 to 40 of my classmates. We had about 155 in the actual class.
Mackenzie Edie (3:10)
Oh, wow.
Scott Siepker (3:10)
And getting to hang out. And it was really, it was so, it was very enjoyable, very rewarding to check in with these people, 20, a quarter of a century after I had last seen most of them. And I will say, I left with a lot of melancholy.
I just, there was a sadness, I think, how fast.
Mackenzie Edie (3:31)
How fast time goes, and how.
Scott Siepker (3:32)
There was almost a mourning of that, a homesickness for a time and place, not just a place where I can never go back. And it's.
Mackenzie Edie (3:48)
I know, but nostalgia, you're using nostalgia as a weapon to hurt yourself.
SPEAKER_3 (3:53)
That's a Taylor Swift lyric.
Mackenzie Edie (3:54)
But you are, and we all do that. And we go back, and Scott, you can't even say that, because last two episodes ago, you told us you were walking through the rain and no one would pick you up and give you a ride. You don't want to go back to that place. You're living your best life now. We can all look back with rose-colored glasses and think, oh, it was perfect. No, it wasn't.
