Yes, we have chosen to free will this morning. Will Faulkner from Fox Footy joins us on the show. We're going to chat about delistings, a wash up of the trade period. We're also going to get an update on what's happening at Brisbane with their coach selection process. Will, welcome.
Will Faulkner (1:37)
Thank you for having me, Duff. How are you going?
Mark Duffield (1:39)
Well, thank you, mate. How's the postseason treating you?
Will Faulkner (1:43)
Yeah, the sun's out in Melbourne today, so I can't complain too much, but I think everyone's probably just taking a big side release now that the trade period's over, and there's still a few nuts and bolts that need to happen with D listings, and obviously there's a draft coming up next month, but I think for the best part, we're all feeling pretty settled here.
Mark Duffield (1:59)
So, interesting names amongst the D listings. At Essendon, a couple of top 10 draft picks, so Nick Cox and Elijah Sardis both moved on by the club.
Will Faulkner (2:11)
Yeah, so Cox was most recently done by the club. So, between him and the two other boys are the bombers that were delisted. The club has sort of said that they're open to the idea of essentially giving them a train on spot during the summer. They will obviously be dependent on who they draft and how they might fill their lists with delisted free agents. The bombers, as part of the compromised assistant package, they're given an extra two-list spot. So, we might see them take on a few mature age recruits, but it also gives them an extra opportunity to have guys like Cox train on with them during the summer if they feel like they can give him one more season to see if he can get things clicking.
But, yeah, Sardis is someone who's got a little bit of interest from North Melbourne reportedly. I think being a number five pick four years ago, I think a lot of clubs would probably feel that maybe the bombers didn't get the best out of him and maybe he didn't get the best out of himself at the club. So, I think when he's taken that high in his rank, it's quite hard to not pass on someone like Cox and Sardis and give them a crack during the preseason, even if it's just as a train on position.
Mark Duffield (3:11)
Don't squeeze the throttle on your Harley Davidson while you're on the line there, Will.
Will Faulkner (3:18)
Very good, Duff.
Mark Duffield (3:20)
Hey, also, Nick Coffield moved on by the Western Bulldogs. Now, I think he was a top ten pick at St Kilda when first drafted.
Will Faulkner (3:30)
Yeah, he was a very high pick. I think he extended his time in the AFL a couple of years with the Western Bulldogs, and we saw him have a couple of match-saving moments, actually, throughout the year.
So I think he's been a reliable defender for the Bulldogs, but as we know, they've been one of the biggest winners, if not the biggest winner, this trade period. So I think it's fair to say that, yeah, there are a few guys at the dogs that would be a little bit unlucky to not have a list spot for next year, and he's one of them. But I think this time, we get a lot of players who get cut from these clubs, particularly at the top end. A lot of them would just be a low-risk level play to bring on to a club. Obviously, it won't cost any draft capital. So I think Caulfield is in a boat with a plethora of guys who have ASL experience that could be handy to the club, perhaps like an Essendon or a West Coast. Obviously, the Eagles still have those extra list spots available with their assistance package that we saw given last year. So yeah, there's a lot of players in Caulfield's boat.
