Finding Mastery with Dr. Michael Gervais

August 5, 2020

This week’s conversation is with Cal Ripken Jr., baseball’s all-time Iron Man. Cal retired from baseball in October, 2001 after 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Although he began and finished his career at third base, Cal is still best known for redefining the position of shortstop.

Know that you did the work, know that you're ready, calm yourself in the moment, see the ball a long time, put a good swing on it, and the goal is to hit the ball hard. And when you hit the ball hard, then something good can happen. It's not that I'm gonna hit a home run, I'm gonna hit a double, I gotta come through now.

If you start thinking that all the time, then you're just adding layers of pressure, and then you play outside of how you play.

All right, welcome back or welcome to the Finding Mastery podcast. I'm Michael Gervais. By trade and training, I'm a sport and performance psychologist, and I just want to take a moment here to thank you if you've already picked up a copy of my new Audible original, and that's titled Compete to Create, and approach the living and leading authentically. And if you found it meaningful, it'd be awesome if you could give it a review on audible.com forward slash compete to create. And if you haven't had the chance to pick it up, I hope you do.

And so with that, you know, the whole idea behind what we're doing behind this podcast is to have conversations with people that are switched on. And my favorite conversations are people that have really understood from the inside out what it means to work inside the arena of high stakes, high performance environments that require, you know, a chipping all in. And those that are able to use sport and performance to be able to explore humanity and what it means to be fully alive. And really, I think the only way to do that is to understand all the different textures of being human. So that's the painful suffering side, as well as the exploratory, celebratory, you know, sometimes easier emotions to deal with, if you will.

Finding Mastery is brought to you by Facet. When we think about what it takes to thrive and to live a life of flourishing, there's no doubt that financial wellness is a big part of that equation.

There's lots of ways to manage your money. And here's one that you might be interested in.

Facet is the next generation of personalized financial planning. They're on a mission to make expert financial advice accessible to the masses. So Facet provides you with flexible access to a team of financial planners and a team of experts across retirement planning, tax strategy, estate planning, and more. And the best part here is that, instead of taking a percentage of your portfolio, Facet only charges an affordable flat membership fee and doesn't charge you to invest with them. This is extremely rare for the industry. As you probably know, most financial advisors charge you a percentage of your assets. And even if it's only 1%, those fees can really add up over the course of your lifetime. And because you're listening to this podcast, Facet is hooking you up with a great offer. When you sign up today, Facet will waive the $250 enrollment fee for new annual members. And they have an epic limited time offer on top of that. To learn more, just head to facet.com/fm. Again, this one is a little different. That's facet, facet.com/fm. To waive your enrollment fee and to learn more about their limited time offer. A little disclosure here. Facet Wealth Inc, facet, is an SEC, Registered Investment Advisor, headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. This is not an offer to sell securities or investment, financial, legal or tax advice. Past performance is not a guarantee of future performance. Terms and conditions apply. This conversation is with Cal Ripken Jr. and he's baseball's all time Iron Man. Cal retired from baseball in October, 2001, after 21 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Although he began and finished his career at third base, Cal is still best known for redefining the position of shortstop. And then in 2007, he was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. And his name is all over the record books. He's one of only eight players in history to achieve 400 home runs and 3000 hits. And most notably, as you'll recognize, Cal broke Lou Gehrig's Major League record of consecutive games. And it was 2,130, and he's played 2,632 consecutive games before he voluntarily ended the streak. That's an important note when we talk about that.
