Why the Hell Is McLaren Making an SUV?
Spike's Car Radio
October 7, 2026
Zack Klapman of The Smoking Tire returns for a full hour of new car reviews, spy shots, and a 1971 station wagon face-off nobody asked for but everyone needed. McLaren confirms an SUV, Bentley drops an 810 hp EV, and a classic car museum closes because nobody can work on carburetors apparently.

Spike Feresten (0:07)
Good to see you.
Cameron (0:07)
Good to see you.
Spike Feresten (0:08)
Look who's sitting in the Zuckerman chair. Zack Klapman. Indeed. Still has a Z.
Also known as Matt Ferris' younger brother. Which is nice.
Zack Klapman (0:17)
Nice to have you here.
Spike Feresten (0:22)
And thank you for sitting in for Zuckerman.
Zack Klapman (0:24)
You're welcome.
Spike Feresten (0:25)
Got to watch out for that seat though. Never know what's coming out of Zuckerman.
Jonny Lieberman (0:29)
These self-greetings mostly. And it's good.
Spike Feresten (0:33)
We got a lot to talk about.
Let me just catch up. Is anything going on that we need to discuss with you? What are you doing these days before we get into the show? We got a lot of cars.
Zack Klapman (0:41)
We have a lot of cars.
Spike Feresten (0:42)
We have a lot of cars to talk about.
Zack Klapman (0:44)
Yeah, we're doing a live show at the Willow Springs Reimagined thing. Oh yeah, that's right. So we'll be doing a thing there.
Spike Feresten (0:49)
That's right. We're going to be there too.
Zack Klapman (0:50)
Yeah.
Spike Feresten (0:51)
That's a big deal. We can talk about Willow. Tickets are up. Willow Reimagined right now.
Tickets are available. I think this is the last week before you can get in there. It was sold out last year. May even be sold out right now. But there's tons of stuff there. Smoking Tires, doing a show. We're just flying up. Jonny was going, not going, was going, not going.
Jonny Lieberman (1:11)
I'll be in Rome driving a Lamborghini. Oh, nice.
Spike Feresten (1:14)
So you're not going. But Zuckerman and I are going to be up there. Car shows, hill climbs. What other stuff are they doing there this year?
Zack Klapman (1:20)
And they always have like cars driving around, expo. I don't know, people, people racing usually some wheel to wheel.
Jonny Lieberman (1:25)
The hill climb is going to be really cool. I have a feeling that's going to be something that you can then go do on your own.
Spike Feresten (1:31)
Vintage motorcycle racing, vintage B sedan racing, pro celebrity race, burnout competition, drifting demonstrations, a concours, a cars and bids auction.
This is Disneyland for car guys. And guess what? They're not, they say the traffic problem has been solved.
Zack Klapman (1:50)
Nice.
Spike Feresten (1:52)
Remember when they made fun of all of us for being in the helicopter?
Zack Klapman (1:55)
I did because I was in a car.
Spike Feresten (1:57)
Yeah. You were in the copter with us and then quickly you said, I got to get out of this copter and get in a car and photographed yourself. So you weren't a part of it. But Zack was in the helicopter with us.
Jonny Lieberman (2:07)
I did enjoy flying over people texting me about the assholes and the helicopters.
Spike Feresten (2:11)
But the Willow guys hired the guys who do Quail and I think Seattle Seahawks football games to hack the parking issue. And they say this year, no lines, multiple lots. Going to be easier. You got to go. This is our this is our new place. You know, you talk about Thermal Club, please. Two and a half hours out. Billionaires buying houses on the track.
Sad, lonely places.
Zack Klapman (2:38)
Which will be happening at Willow Springs in a year or two.
Spike Feresten (2:41)
This is the place.
Jonny Lieberman (2:43)
We want billionaires to give us free helicopter rides.
Zack Klapman (2:45)
Yes.
SPEAKER_2 (2:45)
No one in Thermal Club will give us a ride anywhere.
Spike Feresten (2:48)
No, a big part of this track is public forward-facing. Anybody can go. That's what's nice about it. You don't have to be a member. You can just use the track and you know, they're dumping a lot of money into making this track great. You can't knock them for that anyways.
Speaking of 10 years too late. 10 years too late, McLaren is now confirming they have SUV plans. There it is.
SPEAKER_6 (3:12)
10 years too late.
Spike Feresten (3:14)
The Persang arrival could feature supercar style carbon fiber construction when it debuts before 2030 McLaren has finally confirmed its rumored SUV project is happening. Are you guys excited about this?
Jonny Lieberman (3:26)
I'm excited that it'll allow McLaren to exist.
Zack Klapman (3:29)
Yes, correct.
Spike Feresten (3:30)
What do you mean?
Jonny Lieberman (3:31)
Well, I mean, you know, why did Porsche make a Cayenne? It's to like, you know, keep making 911 You know, the idea is that you have a volume vehicle that's not, you know, a carbon fiber hypercar.
