Welcome back to the Daily Crypto Deep Dive. And today, we're bringing you the first proper installment of something we're going to be doing twice a week. Our CoinMarketCap market pulse. Rather than simply looking at whether Bitcoin is up or down, we're going to dig into what people are actually searching for, which cryptocurrencies are attracting the most attention, what social media is saying, where sentiment is heading, and whether any of that is translating into genuine buying pressure. And today's figures are particularly interesting, because while the wider cryptocurrency market has been struggling, several smaller altcoins are delivering extraordinary returns. So are we seeing the first signs of a new altcoin rotation? Or are traders simply chasing the next big thing before the money disappears again? First, let's establish where the market stands on Friday, the 9th of October. At our latest CoinMarketCap snapshot, the total cryptocurrency market is valued at approximately $2.79 trillion.
Bitcoin is trading around $82,700.
Ethereum around $2,490. XRP, approximately $1.38. And Solana close to $109.
Bitcoin dominance is hovering around 59.6%, which means Bitcoin still accounts for almost 3 fifths of the cryptocurrency market's total value. That dominance figure is important, because it suggests capital is still heavily concentrated in Bitcoin despite the impressive gains we're seeing in certain altcoins. The backdrop to all of this has been particularly brutal. CoinDesk reported that approximately $1.19 billion in leveraged cryptocurrency positions were liquidated during a 24-hour period ending earlier today. More than a billion dollars of that involved traders betting on prices rising.
Ethereum alone accounted for approximately $356 million in liquidations, compared with $298 million for Bitcoin.
Relative to their market capitalizations, Ethereum traders were being liquidated at roughly six times Bitcoin's rate. This is a reminder that a cryptocurrency doesn't need a major negative announcement to experience a dramatic fall. When enough leveraged positions are forced to close, the selling can become self-reinforcing.
Now, let's turn to sentiment, because this is where the figures become slightly contradictory. CoinMarketCap's Fear and Greed Index is currently sitting at 56 out of 100, placing the market in neutral territory. Considering the recent sell-off, you might have expected a far more fearful reading. However, the index considers several different factors, including momentum, volatility, derivatives positioning, and user activity. It isn't simply a poll asking investors whether they're frightened. And importantly, a neutral reading doesn't mean investors are confident. It means the various indicators, when combined, aren't showing an extreme in either direction. CoinMarketCap's Altcoin Season Index provides another clue. That is currently around 55 To officially qualify as altcoin season under CoinMarketCap's methodology, at least 75% of the leading eligible altcoins need to outperform Bitcoin over 90 days. We're not there. So although particular altcoins are experiencing spectacular rallies, the data doesn't support declaring a full-blown altcoin season. What we're seeing looks more selective, with money concentrating around particular stories rather than lifting everything together.
Which brings us to the trending cryptocurrencies. On CoinMarketCap's broader trending dashboard, Starknet, Kaia, Doppler Finance, Talus and Cosmos have all been attracting considerable attention. At one snapshot, Starknet was up approximately 24% over 24 hours, Kaia around 42%, Doppler Finance roughly 24% and Talus more than 100%.
These are enormous moves, particularly when Bitcoin and Ethereum have struggled throughout the week. But the interesting question isn't simply how much they've risen. It's why traders have chosen these specific cryptocurrencies. Let's begin with Starknet, because this may be the most interesting story of the entire episode. Starknet is an Ethereum scaling network that uses sophisticated zero-knowledge cryptography. Its token, STRK, is also the number one trending cryptocurrency on CoinMarketCap's UK leaderboard. The major development is that Starkware chief executive Eli Ben Sassen has publicly discussed the possibility of Starknet becoming an independent Layer 1 blockchain. One of the reasons involves preparing its security for the potential risks presented by future quantum computing. The project has discussed targeting quantum resistance by 2027
This has generated considerable excitement, but there's an important distinction between discussing an architectural change and actually delivering it. No final migration has been approved, and becoming independent from Ethereum would introduce new security and operational challenges. Furthermore, Starknet has a token unlock scheduled for the 15th of October, with approximately 127 million STRK due for release. That doesn't guarantee selling, but it does introduce additional potential supply. This is exactly why our twice-weekly analysis needs to examine the actual developments behind a trending coin rather than treating every dramatic price increase as evidence of long-term success.
Another notable cryptocurrency is Kaia, which has gained attention through its positioning around Asian blockchain payments and stablecoins.
CoinMarketCap has highlighted developments involving Japanese stablecoin infrastructure, wallet integrations and post-quantum security partnerships. That gives Kaia a genuine business narrative. However, an established project with useful infrastructure can still experience a speculative price surge. A 40% daily increase doesn't necessarily mean network adoption has grown by 40%. Those are completely different measurements, and confusing them is one of the easiest mistakes cryptocurrency investors make. Then we've got Talus and Doppler Finance, two projects that demonstrate why the trending leaderboard can be both fascinating and dangerous. Talus is building infrastructure for automated artificial intelligence agents operating on blockchain networks.
