WHITE SOX POSTGAME: Sean Burke SHELLED for 7 Runs as Sox Suffer Loss vs Pirates | CHGO White Sox
CHGO Chicago White Sox Podcast
September 9, 2026
A rough outing from Sean Burke sunk the White Sox early. Burke only completed 1.1 innings, allowing 8 hits, and 7 earned runs tonight vs. the Pirates. How has Burke become so off-kilter? Plus, Munetaka Murakami reached 30 HRs, but he is still slumping. How can he get back on track?

Welcome to the CHGO White Sox Post Game Show. Coming to you live from Studio West, Upper West Loop offices here in the downtown of Chicago. I'm your host, Sean Anderson, alongside me, Malachi Hayes, a sports reporter for South Side Weekly, and a contributor.
What's that?
Malachi Hayes (0:21)
Not just baseball.
Sean Anderson (0:22)
Not just baseball, you know, a multifaceted sports reporter for South Side Weekly, and contributor for South Side Sox. It's been a while. Not that awful, Stainsong, but it's been a while. Welcome back.
Malachi Hayes (0:32)
It's been a month, I guess. Only 10 Rockshelaski at bats to talk about. So, yeah, we got to find some other stuff, but always good to be back.
Sean Anderson (0:40)
Yeah, and we got a lot to talk about. We got Sean Burke to talk about. We got Munetaka Murakami to talk about. We got Kyle Teal to talk about. And we will obviously talk about the American League Central and the Houston Astros where it is. Glad everyone's taking this very kindly and very normally and chill. Jeff in the chat, panic mode, definitely time to panic. DJ, buckle up for a historic collapse. Oh, I missed out.
SPEAKER_3 (1:04)
We're having a normal one.
Sean Anderson (1:05)
Haven't done a show in five days and everyone's just cool, calm and collected.
Malachi Hayes (1:09)
I say like unironically, yep, everyone's having a normal one here, which like my historic collapse.
Is it historic if it's really in line with what they've trained us to expect? I mean, they've collapsed more often than not. It's fair in these in these scenarios. So a very historically precedent collapse, I might say. If that's where you want to go, I guess.
Sean Anderson (1:28)
It's game 144 There's 18 games left. Three of them are against Cleveland. You currently have a two game lead over Cleveland and I believe a one and a half game lead over the Houston Astros for the second place in the American League.
Are you worried? Is a bead of sweat dripping down your back or do you have to see the actual games against Cleveland to make that determination that the White Sox are going to have a quote unquote, historical collapse or something right in line with who they are?
Malachi Hayes (1:58)
I mean, like, what does worried even mean in this context? And, you know, we're 144 games into the season and we're saying, are we worried that they're going to miss the playoffs? I mean, a little perspective check there for sure, too. But no, beyond the general uncertainty, I'm actually not as worried as I might have predicted I would be in this kind of kind of context simply because we're here, not necessarily because the Sox have played horribly. They've been inconsistent. They have not been the, you know, red hot, a May team that we saw for the first couple months there. They've been around 500 since the All-Star break.
But they haven't been horrible. They've been relatively consistent in their ups and downs. You know, they haven't been too, they haven't been very high, but they also haven't gotten very low either. Meanwhile, Cleveland is here because they are red hot, as they typically do this time of year, it seems, and are just pulling winds out of their asses left, left and right. I mean, was it three or four against Cleveland without even leading a game? Against Detroit, yeah. Sorry, against Detroit without even leading a game at one time. So I'm, you know, I'm not worried to the extent that I still don't think this pace is going to keep up for another three weeks for Cleveland. So even if the Sox don't necessarily catch fire a game, even if this is the White Sox that we see the rest of the way, a team that, you know, wins two or three, loses two or three somewhere in between, I still would not bet on Cleveland keeping up that 600 ball pace even over three weeks if they need to. I just don't see the talent there.
Sean Anderson (3:22)
Yeah, and I mean, now they pushed Burke back a day and we're going to get into Sean Burke pretty much right now.
They pushed Burke back a day and were able to get him rest on Monday and then he's starting today on Tuesday and you thought it would have some sort of help for him. Let's get through the top of the first and it'll probably take an hour and a half because it was long. Sean Burke vs. Bubba Chandler. Top one, Connor Griffin, lead off double. Pretty good. Pretty good player. Brandon Lau with the walk. Was it Brandon Lau?
