What's the history of chocolate?

Forever Ago

October 7, 2026

Chocolate. You know it. You love it. You can’t get enough of it. Today, we think of chocolate as a sweet treat, but for most of human history, it was actually a bitter drink.

Brains On Universe What do you think?

Joy Dolo (0:43)

Do you love it or do you love it?

Camila (0:45)

That jacket looks amazing. Purple velvet really suits you.

Joy Dolo (0:49)

And what do you think of the top hat?

Camila (0:51)

I think I'm gonna use them for myself ASAP.

Joy Dolo (0:55)

Thanks, Camila. You know, I'm trying to really dress the part I was born to play. Eccentric chocolatier.

Camila (1:01)

Are you acting in the next version of Willy Wonka?

Joy Dolo (1:04)

And steal Timothee Chalamet's thunder? I would never. No! I'm dressing like a chocolatier because I'm aspiring to be a real one, like Willy Wonka, and open my own chocolate emporium. Come with me and you'll see a world full of mocha chocolate, brownie bites, chalky chips, and hot fudge.

Picture this. Hot fudge, hot springs, fields filled with rich crushed Oreo dirt, truffles as far as the eye can see.

Camila (1:46)

Where are you going to put all of this stuff?

Joy Dolo (1:48)

In my closet, of course. There's more than enough room.

Camila (1:57)

Oh, right. I forgot. Your closet is ginormous and never-ending black hole of possibilities.

Joy Dolo (2:03)

Including the chocolate kind.

Camila (2:05)

Before we start the episode, what are the odds I can get a matching velvet coat and top hat?

Joy Dolo (2:09)

Extremely high.

You're listening to Forever Ago, part of the Brains On Universe. I'm your host, Joy Dolow, and I'm here today with my co-host, Camila from Orlando, Florida.

Camila (2:26)

Hi, Joy. Thanks for the velvet jacket and top hat. Coral is my favorite color.

Joy Dolo (2:30)

Anytime. Coral is an awesome color. I'm so excited we're in matching outfits. And I'm even more excited because today we're talking about the cocoa that can't quit.

Camila (2:40)

Chocolate.

Joy Dolo (2:41)

So Camila, you actually wrote in asking a question about this.

Camila (2:45)

Yeah. My question was, what is the history of chocolate?

Joy Dolo (2:48)

That is a delicious and a delightful question. So what made you curious about this?

Camila (2:53)

I don't really know. It's just like one time my mom was driving me back from school. And then I was like, what's the history of chocolate? Cause it just came out to my head. And she's like, I don't know. But then I'm like, wait a minute, I can add this in. So that's when we went home, that's exactly what I did.

Joy Dolo (3:07)

Perfect. And you got it in. That was an interesting question. So I have to know, what are your feelings on chocolate?

Camila (3:13)

My feelings of chocolate, I'm like, it's good, but I'm not like, oh my gosh, I love chocolate, I need it right now. Or else I'll die. Help me, I need chocolate. I'm like, I like it, I'd have it, but not so much of it, unless it's like straight from the bar. Like I love it like that.

Joy Dolo (3:28)

Yeah. So are you like team like dark chocolate, milk chocolate or white chocolate?

Camila (3:32)

Milk chocolate. Because white chocolate, I feel like it's too creamy. And then dark chocolate, it's just dark chocolate.

Joy Dolo (3:39)

Yeah. It tastes like dirt. I actually don't like dark chocolate either.

Camila (3:43)

It just tastes like salt.

Joy Dolo (3:45)

Yeah. It's like I need the sugar, like that extra creaminess that comes with it. So if you had to eat chocolate, we know it's not your favorite, but what's your favorite way to eat chocolate?

Camila (3:54)

Straight up. I love chocolate. Just straight up from the bar, like pull it from the fridge, just eat it like that. Like no, no, no, no.

Joy Dolo (4:00)

So you like it cold too, huh?

Camila (4:02)

Yes, I like it cold.

Joy Dolo (4:03)

So you like chocolate kind of. Is there another type of treat that you like more?

Camila (4:07)

Ice cream. I love ice cream.

Joy Dolo (4:10)

What's your favorite flavor of ice cream?

Camila (4:12)

I don't actually have a favorite flavor.

I like a lot of them. I don't like chocolate as much. That's hilarious. If it was a little less chocolatey, then yes, I would like it, or it tastes more like milk chocolate. Chocolate ice cream just does not taste like chocolate ice cream. I'm like, ew.
