Hi, I'm Madigan, and you're listening to Your Angry Neighborhood Feminist, a podcast that explores the world through a personal feminist perspective.

Hi, everyone. I am back with more news.

And I'm going to start this episode by giving you all a little update on something that I discussed in last week's mini episode. Well, part B of last week's mini episodes.

Last week, I told you about the controversy over Macklemore's free Palestine speech that he gave while he was opening for Ed Sheeran and the response from Pink and so on and so forth. But now, he has been dropped from Ed Sheeran's tour, and we got to talk about that.

My last news episode went up on September 14th, and that was the day that Macklemore announced that he'd been removed from Ed Sheeran's tour.

He wrote a 1,000-word or so statement that he posted on Instagram. I read the whole thing, and though the entire thing is very important, and I would love to just recite it all out to you, I did my best to pinpoint the most important parts and go off of that a little bit. So, this is how it began. I'm not sure how to start this, so I'm going to speak from the heart and share the truth. Ed Sheeran and his team have made the decision to remove me from the loop tour. But before I get into it, I want to say something that should be obvious. In this moment, I think it matters. I am not a victim. Ed Sheeran is not a victim. Pink is not a victim. We all have careers, money, opportunities, safety and audiences around the world. Whatever consequences any of us face for what we say, we get to go home to our families. The victims are the Palestinian people, the men, women and children who have been killed, starved, displaced and forced to live through unimaginable violence. More than 20,000 children have been killed in Gaza alone. People are being killed today and people will be killed tomorrow.

I want to make sure that as I tell this story, we don't lose sight of that. He went on to say, Ed is my friend. I've known him for 13 years. We've shared late nights, studio sessions and stages. He has this infectious magic about him that I've grown to love. I consider him a brother. And because of that, we've had some difficult conversations this past week. The type of talks rooted in love and respect for one another that still end up in a place of fundamental disagreement. Nothing I'm writing here is out of spite or because I want to tear down his character. But as I told Ed multiple times on the phone, our friendship can't change my responsibility to tell the truth about what happened. And I think this is such an important distinction to make, and it's something that I've actually given a lot of thought myself. I think I mentioned this when I saw the comedy stand-up show, but a couple of months ago, Max and I went to see Mark Maron do a set. And in it, he talked about his friend, Nate Bergasi, and how he attended Trump's UFC fight event thing, and how Nate reacted and how he was concerned that Mark was going to hate him and not want to be his friend anymore. And Mark talked about how he's a good guy. He's just kind of an idiot politically, and talked about how he's very, very religious and so on and so forth. Yet, they still have a foundation in their friendship that helps it move forward. And Mark Marin is someone that I definitely look up to for the most part. I think that he is a very thoughtful and smart person. And so taking in what he had to say and applying it to some of the relationships in my life, where sometimes I get some complicated feelings because I know that our hearts and our morals are the same, some of my friends aren't as political. And sometimes their views on things are a little bit wonky because they don't take the time to educate themselves in the same way, which of course is really frustrating for me to be around, but it's not my responsibility to lecture to every single person in my life about educating themselves, especially if they're adults, that's their responsibility to do so.
