If people buy into your purpose, you can then create a culture where responsibility is a central piece of the puzzle.

You can then start to empower people more because they understand the purpose, so you're able to create a much more decentralized organization. The ability to create collaboration across the organization is also enabled because people understand a shared purpose.

Michael Gervais (0:32)

Welcome, I'm Dr. Michael Gervais, and this is the Finding Mastery Podcast, where we are learning from people who are challenging the edges of the human experience in business, in sport, in science, in life. We're pulling back the curtain to explore how they have committed to mastering both their craft and their minds in an effort to express their potential. And in the spirit of getting better, we're always appreciating feedback on how we can make the podcast as valuable as possible for you. So there's two places that you can share any thoughts or comments or ideas about getting better. One is our weekly newsletter, and we've added a link to the top of each of the newsletters so that you can share your insights on the previous week's podcast. And if you're not subscribed there, you can sign up at findingmastery.net forward slash newsletter.

And we also fired up a YouTube channel. All episodes along with short clips are available there in the comment section. It's a great place for you to let us know your thoughts on that episode.

Finding Mastery is brought to you by Bubbs Naturals. Like many of you, I'm mindful about what I put in my body. For me, it usually comes down to ingredients and simplicity. The shorter the list, the better. And if I have to look it up, I'm usually out. That's why I've been loving Bubbs Naturals. Bubbs creates products with high quality, all-natural ingredients designed to help people get after their adventures in life. I've been a huge fan of their hydrate or dye electrolyte mix for years now. It only has six total ingredients, but it's packed with five times the electrolytes as conventional sports drinks, with none of the added sugars, artificial flavors, sweeteners, or preservatives. It's great for post-workout recovery, outdoor adventures, and staying hydrated during long periods of travel, which I've done a lot of lately, and Bubz is a go-to for me. Plus, all Bubz products are 100% NSF 4 Sport certified, which means they pass the most rigorous quality standards. They're currently in just about every MLB locker room, working closely with the Red Sox, Yankees, Rangers, Cardinals, Diamondbacks, and more, of course.

Now, this week's conversation is with Dr. Ranjay Gulati, the Paul R. Lawrence MBA class of 1942 professor and the former unit head of the Organizational Behavior Unit at Harvard Business School until recently. He chaired the Advanced Management Program. That's their flagship senior leader executive program at the school. Ranjay studies how resilient organizations, those that prosper when it's smooth sailing, as well as when the seas are wild, how they drive growth and profitability. The Economist, Financial Times, and the Economist Intelligence Unit have listed him as among the top handful of business school scholars whose work is most relevant to management practice. I've known Ranjay for a few years and I am thrilled to introduce you to him. He's got a rich and deep understanding of how great companies work. And then we dive into the ongoing process that leaders drive to ensure that purpose is at the foundation of the entire organization, as well as it being a strategic compass for decision making. And with that, let's jump right into this week's conversation with Dr. Ranjay Gulati.
