Welcome to episode 843 What it actually looks like to surrender your plans to God. What it actually looks like to surrender your plans to God. You know, I've talked about surrender a couple of times on this podcast, and I think it's a great topic to bring up every now and then. The conversation definitely keeps coming up both my own life and with people, members of my community, friends. Surrender is an interesting topic because I think a lot of times we think we're surrendering our plans or ideas or expectations. Yeah, God, whatever you say, whatever you want, whatever you want. And then the human in us finds ourselves in a situation or gets distracted, or it gets excited about something we're trying to like, maybe almost make it happen again with that kind of control of the outcome of like, this is what I want. Well, of course, it's what you want. It's what's in your heart from God. And but when we get distracted or overexcited, you know, or like our own will takes over, we can miss a step. And, you know, in several conversations that I've had recently, I'm often reminded of a mentor, and I've mentioned this topic before. I've mentioned this, I think, mini story before, but I think it's always worth revisiting. A mentor from about four years ago said, when effort is finished, Matt, God will take over. And he's like, I think that you understand that. He's like, but there will come a time, you know, we're talking about a couple of different topics in that conversation. He said, there will come a time where it really will make sense even more. And I get it. I get it. And what he meant about when effort is finished, God will take over. We are meant to show up. We are meant to try. We are meant to, you know, try to understand what God is calling us to, try to make, be in the game and make it happen because we feel called to it. And there's a lot of trial and error in that, right? We're putting ourselves out there, we're showing up, we're trying to, you know, do all the things. And his point was that through a lot of trial and error, through your own experiences, you will get to a place where your own will will not be enough, but you will have at least exhausted yourself on the field of battle. He's like, you'll at least potentially have exhausted yourself to the point where you go, this can only be done through the fullness of God. And that sometimes we have to get to a place of like, we need to give our effort and we need to relinquish the control of how we end up receiving the fuller picture of what it is that we're playing for. And it allows God to come in, in a way that truly gives, it's the whole nah, bigger mentality that you see me post online. Whatever we're thinking, God's plans are greater. It's not even necessarily about the size of the plans. It's the delivery of them. It's the way it's brought. And it makes sense when you really start to try to understand it, meaning like, well, what does your version look like, God? And the deeper I connect with God, the more peace I just naturally feel.
And it makes sense that, as humans, we make ourselves, I think, sometimes so anxious because we're trying to control the outcome, trying to make something happen, trying to see it through. And what I'm asking of all of you, which is what I constantly ask myself, is can you take one extra step in asking God and say, you know what? I've tried. And you know what? I feel it. I know I'm for it. I give it to you. I give it to you. I give it over to you. Now, I think sometimes the hard part in that is it takes each of us a certain point to be able to surrender whatever that area of our life is to God.
And what often it takes, why I say it's different for each of us is because it depends on the subject matter. It depends on what you're hoping for. It depends on maybe how hard you're working on it, or how involved you are with it, or how much that current thing is a priority in your life at the time.
