What Does it Mean to Be a Democrat or a Republican?

Nick Capodice (0:02)

Well, September has come to a close. Spirit Halloween has started to open and recently shuttered businesses. School is in full swing, which means that our Back to School series is coming to a close. And next week, we're gonna get back to some new Civics 101 episodes. So for our final salvo, it is the last of our shows most used in classrooms around the country. It's all about parties.

Our two parties. We're talking the R and the D.

What does it mean to be a Republican or a Democrat? How have those labels changed over the last 150 odd years? And what might they become in the next 100 years? It is a complete breakdown of the Republican and Democratic parties today on Civics 101 Stick around.

Hannah McCarthy (2:15)

You know, Nick, I was born on an election night.

Nick Capodice (2:21)

Oh, you don't say. You know, I haven't heard this before, Hannah.

SPEAKER_15 (2:25)

What a surprise.

Hannah McCarthy (2:26)

The 1990 Massachusetts gubernatorial election between Republican Bill Weld and Democrat John Silver.

SPEAKER_13 (2:33)

All right, Mr. Weld, the question now for Mr. Silver. Can you tell us, doctor, what is your program for controlling health care costs in this state?

George Will (2:41)

Yes, I'm highly concerned about that and have made a consistent and steady study of it since the campaign began. I think first and foremost, we've got to stop the press.

Nick Capodice (2:49)

I wonder, Hannah, if maybe, just maybe, your mom ever tells the story like, you were born and they said, it's a girl and who's the governor?

Hannah McCarthy (2:57)

Okay. All right, I've told you this before.

Nick Capodice (3:00)

Once or twice, Hannah.

Hannah McCarthy (3:01)

But the reason I am telling all these people.

Nick Capodice (3:04)

These people, these people out there listening to us.

Hannah McCarthy (3:07)

Yes, these people is that I grew up being told that I was born on the night of an election between two very strong, very smart, very engaging candidates and or so my mother claims, she would have been content no matter who won.

Nick Capodice (3:29)

I cannot imagine anyone saying such a thing today.

Hannah McCarthy (3:33)

Nor can I. So today, what happened to us?

Whatever happened to, I take either candidate happily.

Nick Capodice (3:41)

Wait, seriously, are you going to actually answer that question in this episode?

Hannah McCarthy (3:44)

I am absolutely not. I also don't necessarily believe that that ever really existed. But I did think that today we could do a little storytelling. Because I can tell you how the Republican and Democratic Parties became the Republican and Democratic Parties.

Sometimes it helps us, and maybe it only helps us for the duration of a podcast. Sometimes it helps us like each other a little more when we know each other a little better. So this is Civics 101, and we're partying down with the Republicans and the Democrats.

George Will (4:18)

Hello.

Hannah McCarthy (4:19)

Hello. Is this Mr. George Will?
