Welcome in.
Dave Kluge (0:12)
It is Monday morning, which means that we just got off of a crazy week of NFL action. Joey Wright and Jeff Bell are joining me to talk about all of the weekend's games. We still have Monday Night Football left to go, but we're going to discuss all of the games that just happened Friday and Sunday. And let's start, Jeff Bell, with the Patriots and Bills. I'm going to throw this one to you first. I know this was a bit of a wonk game, and we see these every now and then. It's still early in the season. A lot of these teams are still figuring out who they are, but we saw the Patriots beat the Bills 29 to 26
Jeff, let me just ask you, Drake May, like, are you looking at those first three games as weighing more than last week's game, or do you think that things got back on track? How should fantasy managers be feeling about Drake May coming off this performance?
Jeff Bell (0:55)
I guess maybe I might push back to you and ask, do you think he's talented? Do you think he's a talented quarterback that warranted being a top three pick in the 2024 draft where he went?
Dave Kluge (1:05)
I think there are a lot of tools that make him a very talented quarterback. He's great at throwing on the run. He's got a big arm. He can squeeze a ball into tight windows. But there are a lot of things through the first three weeks that had me questioning what I thought I knew about Drake May.
Jeff Bell (1:18)
So Drake May comes from a basketball family, a very, very strong North Carolina, University of North Carolina basketball family. Sometimes shooters just need to see the ball go through the hoop. And I think that Drake May was in a spot where he just needed to see the ball go through the hoop and it did multiple times against the Bills. I mean, there were amazing placement. The game winning touchdown that he hit, Efton Chizaman was fantastic. And so I think that May just needed to get his confidence back. He needed him to remember that he can make the shots more or less. So he hit the throws. And I think this was an example of the Bills. Unfortunately, came in flat the second week in a row. They survived last week, and they did not survive this week. And it's a frustrating game as a Bills fan, because it's a very similar position to where the Bills were 4-0 last year. The Patriots were 2-2 last year. We know that the Patriots went on a run, took the division, and it was a week five game that they beat the Bills in. And that edged it up to being 3-2 versus 4-1 for the Bills one game back. Now Bills 3-1, Patriots 2-2, they're right there. They're a half a game back. They've got this game here, and this was one. I think there were multiple games this week that had Buffalo 1 and gone to 4-0, Patriots went 1-3. I think you can almost clinch the AFC East by Halloween or Thanksgiving or so. Now it's wide open.
Dave Kluge (2:37)
Yeah, I completely agree there. And this is one of the things I do my rest of season rankings. And when I shared my rankings last week, a lot of people were saying, how could you still have Drake May inside your top 12 after what we've seen through the first three weeks? And it's just like weird things happen in these small samples. And yes, the first three weeks of the season might trick us into believing one thing, but I think that we have a larger data set telling us that Drake May is probably a good quarterback, especially a good fantasy football quarterback, than what we saw through the playoffs last year, through the early part of this season. So Joey, I've seen you nodding along a lot, as Jeff and I have been talking through the early part of this show. Do you tend to agree that Drake May is probably back, and probably back to being a guy that you can put in your fantasy lineups going forward?
Joey Wright (3:15)
I mean, out the gate, he gets Seattle, Pittsburgh and Jacksonville.
That's pretty tough, and I know the narrative coming into the season was, oh, Drake May, he's not going to be able to do so great without an easy schedule. Well, I've got some good news for everybody that maybe still has Drake May on their team. He has one matchup against a top 10 opposing defense until week 14 So there's good games ahead for Drake May. I think both can be true though. I think we got to see him rush yesterday, which we hadn't seen since week one. That's very valuable for Drake May, for the floor when you draft him on your team.
