B Wil (1:33)
There was an idea in the preseason that he would be the guy.
Mike G (1:41)
Plays with Berlewitz.
B Wil (1:43)
Yeah. Right. Like, you know, and then eventually he took over. Now, the crazy thing is, I think that, you know, you didn't lose a game, but you have changed quarterback to get the coaches saw enough there to say, we need to move on here. And maybe this is Jared's team.
Ike Jones (2:01)
Yeah. So it was always a quarterback rotation. So oftentimes interchangeably used, because I guess they are synonyms QB1 and being named starter are kind of quote unquote used interchangeably, but really Blaise Berluetz was named the starter for Austin P and the starter for Delaware. But it was always talked that it was a quarterback rotation and the competition was extending past fall camp, which frustrated me and Vanderbilt fans just as much as, as anything else. But really the coaching staff was just so comfortable with Blaise Berluetz. He's been underneath Tim Beck since he was still at New Mexico state. He transferred over with Diego Pavi and Eli Stowers and that whole crew prior to 2024
And I think in some ways, Clark Lee started his tenure at Vanderbilt in 2021 with a loss to East Tennessee State University. His first game as the head coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores, the first loss to an FCS program in the history of Vanderbilt football, which was an amazing stat to begin with that had never happened considering Vanderbilt football's history. But in some ways, I think Clark Lee was just seeing the absolute worst case scenario that could happen and knew where Blaise Berluetz was in this offense. You're not going to get the great plays from Blaise Berluetz, but you weren't going to get the devastating mistakes like you potentially could from Curtis. And then I think it was always in the back of the minds of Vanderbilt fans you were hoping eventually Curtis would show what he needed to show in those first couple of weeks and he would be named the permanent starter. And that is what happened. But I think you do sacrifice something when you lose those valuable reps for Curtis early in the season against relatively inferior competition.
Mike G (3:33)
That was going to be my question is like, do you like the fact that he gave like kind of like they eased him into it where they gave him some reps but didn't put all of it on his shoulders initially or would you have preferred they just said hey listen we're riding with you kid out the gate let's go make it happen and and let the chips fall where they may.
Every game day you show up for your team. Now it's your time.
