Welcome back to the SCNWA studio out here at Optus Stadium. It is a Monday morning in Perth. It's going to be cloudy. Chance of a shower in the city today is currently 14 degrees outside, building to a top of 17 degrees later in the day. If you think that's a bit wild, you should have seen the weather up on the Gold Coast when the WA 16 clinched their National 16 title last week. It was very wild and windy at Southport, but they got the job done against Victoria Country and their coach Mick Glassborow joins us on the show now. Mick, welcome.

Thank you. Thanks for having me.

**Mark Duffield** (1:38)
Mate, it was pretty windy there. Can you describe the conditions?

**Mick Glassborow** (1:42)
Yeah, it was the same. It was bloody interesting. We sort of got there and watching the other game, and it was like blowing a goal towards one end, and then lightning hit. And so the game before us had to be delayed for sort of 30 minutes with a lightning strike, and we weren't too sure if our game was going to go ahead for a little bit. So we were a little bit nervous thinking, jeez, if we'd done all this work and hopefully get a game on, and lucky enough that the thunderstorm rolled through, and then we just played in a bit of rain and wind throughout the day, which was some tricky conditions for the boys.

**Mark Duffield** (2:10)
So it's our first title since 2017, which is a monumental achievement in itself, but the team was quite dominant.

**Mick Glassborow** (2:18)
Yeah, we were. I think across the three games, we controlled. One of the stats last night, we kicked 25-52 over the three games. So we converted.
We would have really been able to probably dominate the games more, but I thought we controlled the games really well through the three of them, having some get the key forwards in the front half, probably another big difference this year to be able to kick too.

**Mark Duffield** (2:43)
How satisfying is it, a victory like this when you've beaten the rest of the country?

**Mick Glassborow** (2:47)
Yes, it's fine. It's always good. You know, WA footy, we're a proud state. And you know, I said when we were away, it's always nice to beat big metro and big country. So, yeah, for the boys to be able to go on the big stage and play against the very best and come away with a win.
It's an awesome effort and it's just a reward, I think, for not just our program, but for a lot of work in WA 43, all the waffle clubs that they're putting in at junior level. And we're starting to see some really good benefits of that over the last couple of years.

**Mark Duffield** (3:12)
So did you realize that this group was this good when you got them together, Mick?

**Mick Glassborow** (3:18)
No, not really.
It's sort of weird, when you're watching the future games, you look at it with a little bit of talent and you get excited. You're like, oh, there's a good forward at that club. And having key forwards at this age group is probably a massive advantage. We had three that we felt were A-grade forwards. We started to get a little bit excited. And it probably wasn't until we probably played our first trial game after camp against South Freyja, where you walked away and went, oh, we've got something pretty special here. The boys were playing against South Freyja side and were able to win. But the way we moved the ball and the way they connected, I thought, oh, we're on the right track. And then we built from there and the boys got a fair bit of confidence. So we knew we had definitely some talent to work with very early.
