One hour away from the start of the college football season, the VSiN College Football Tailgate Show. I'm Tim Murray, live from the Circus Sportsbook in downtown Las Vegas. We go behind the counter, Chuck Esposito, welcome him back for another season of a little guessing game I like to do with him. Who is the heaviest bet side of week zero? Is it going to be North Carolina with the unfortunate news, as we have found out today, that they will be dealing with a big absence. They are unfortunately had to deal with some off the field issues throughout this off season. And right now, they are also going to be without one of their top wide receivers, maybe their top wide receiver, as Jordan Dwyer is out today for TCU, as he last year led the team with 54 receptions, 730 receiving yards and 7 touchdowns. So TCU will be without their leading receiver going into today's game. And that's why we've seen a little bit of market movement here on TCU, down to 7, or excuse me, on UNC, I beg your pardon, down to 7.5. Took a small piece of 8.5 when the news of Dwyer came out.
I was probably going to get there myself, just based off of the contrarian angle of that game. Should be rainy, wet over in Dublin at Aviva Stadium, total right now sitting at 46.5. But eight games today across the FBS board to start off the college football season, week zero. We get an ACC matchup between NC State and Virginia. Just heard from Jimmy Yacht. He really likes NC State in that spot as a dog on the road at Virginia. I'm not there yet. Should be an intriguing quarterback battle of Beau Pribula for Virginia, making his Virginia debut against CJ Bailey, a veteran who is back yet again. But let's dive into these games one by one and let's go back to TCU taking on North Carolina and Sonny Dykes, the head coach of TCU on the new offensive coordinator down there at UNC, Bobby Petrino.
**Sonny Dykes** (2:21)
Well, they both have been doing this a long time, and there's a lot of take.
And so they've done a lot of different things. Bobby's done a lot of things offensively that are different depending on his personnel, and I think that's what good coaches do, is they adapt and adjust to what they have. And I think he's done a nice job of doing that. And then same thing with Bill. I mean, they're both really good football coaches, very experienced, and really good at making adjustments and trying to stay ahead of the game. And so, we talked about this, always important in particular in early season games, you gotta worry about yourself. You gotta play clean football, gotta take care of the ball, not turn it over, play penalty free, be really good in the kicking game. So those are all things, I think, that probably determine who wins and loses early season ball games.
**Tim Murray** (3:15)
Sonny Dykes there, giving a little insight behind his relationship with Bobby Petrino, first year as the offensive coordinator down there in North Carolina. Billy Edwards will be the starter, traveled, well traveled quarterback, Maryland, Wisconsin, now UNC and Jaden Craig, very intriguing prospect. The Ivy League Offensive Player of the Year makes his debut with a new offensive coordinator. So in today's game, a pair of new offensive coordinators, a pair of new quarterbacks as well for both these teams, which isn't that surprise in this day and age of college football. A game that we've certainly discussed a bunch and with our trip out to Hawaii, we got a little extra info.
Pete Daniel reporting earlier this morning what we all knew. Pafele Ashlock is out for Hawaii, the leading receiver. Lot of depth lost there for Hawaii as well on the defensive side of the ball. But something that's been brought up regarding Hawaii is the travel to the mainland. If you look at Timmy Chang, this is year number five for him at Hawaii, his alma mater where he was a legend as a quarterback under June Jones. But for four seasons there as the head coach, if you date back to 2022 when he took over the reins and the cupboard was rather bare, number one cover team in college football at home, the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors. Now they go on the road. So have they tweaked things? Last year they were able to get a couple of wins on the mainland. They beat Air Force, they beat Colorado State, but struggled mightily.
