Welcome in. It is a Sunday edition of the VSiN Weekend Morning Line.
We have reached the weekend before Labor Day Weekend, which is hard to believe on a lot of different fronts, a lot of different levels. And it means that week zero for college football done and dusted, it means next week and at this time, you'll have a full slate to recap for the most part when it comes to all the games that are being played that Saturday of Labor Day Weekend. And Will, as I welcome you in on this fine Sunday morning, seems like the public gets cleaned out right out of the gate because Bill Belichick's North Carolina Tar Heels in low-scoring, ugly fashion in Dublin go and take down TCU, offense optional. But considering that the betting public wanted to be all over the horn frogs, considering that I'm sure a whole lot of Moneyline parlay is going into next week, including TCU. I'm sure there are a whole lot of folks behind the counter. Very happy with that result to kick off the college football season.

JJ, what's going on? Yeah, fun to have some games that count to talk about and recap. And furthermore, USC big favorite doesn't cover. You figured probably not a lot of people taking the points with San Jose State and same thing.
Florida State, New Mexico State and the games outside of the late one was fun. That was good. TCU North Carolina was competitive and you got it upset. There was a law where man, you're watching a lot of garbage football. The games just were not good for a long stretch yesterday. But I was happy for Belichick. I know most people don't like him. He's polarizing. If you're not a Patriots fan, you feel like he cheated. He beat your team and people don't really like him. But for him, JJ, at his age, all the money he's made, everything he's accomplished to be coaching a North Carolina team that has no chance of winning a championship. He could be on a beach somewhere. I get it. He's getting paid. He's getting paid. Well, he's not doing it for charity. But when TCU jumps offside and TCU was terribly coached, they were lined up offside anyway.
And one of the guys jumps on top of it. The quarterback was bad. But when the TCU guy jumps offside, North Carolina clinches the game and Belichick is pointing first down. You could tell how happy he was, how good he felt. So I was happy for him. I don't like any of these legends, coaches, players, to just go out with a whimper. And Belichick ultimately might still do that, but he don't like it to be embarrassing. Nobody wants to see Willie Mays in a uniform falling down in the outfield. So I was happy for Belichick. And I know most people don't like him, but that was cool to see him remind people he can coach. The defense looked good, they looked fast, they made adjustments. And in North Carolina, who knows, maybe a little better than people think. And on the TCU side, hard to believe just what? Four years ago, this team was playing for national championship. That was a rough, rough performance yesterday.

Yeah, uninspiring to say the least. And now you have to wonder, because it is a stand-alone game, so it's a game that's gonna have more eyeballs. It's a game that's gonna have more attention. Is this gonna change, in your opinion, the public's quote unquote perception of what North Carolina is this year? I mean, for me, it shouldn't. Well, they don't have a ton of talent. They're still an offensively challenged team. But Kim Belichick, dare I say on that defense, squeezed out an extra one or two. Like, I was in my head watching and trying to figure out, okay, I'm like, what would be success?
What can Belichick walk away from if it's at the end of this year or at the end of the North Carolina tenure and say, all right, this wasn't like a total out and out the Bakun disaster.
What is that? Like a couple of eight win years? Like last year was ugly. It was ugly. I feel like it's got to look better than that.
And it's not going to be some perfect storybook, right? Where he goes from the Patriots and then goes and takes North Carolina like to the top of the college football mountain. I find it hard to believe that's going to happen because I don't think he's going to have the patience to want to stick around for that long. Number two, I just don't think he will be able to build the sort of power that you need to be able to build in college football. But North Carolina has money. They have a good alumni base. They have a decent enough pedigree of football. It's not a football school. We all know it's a basketball school. But what's success for Belichick where it doesn't like have him walking off that field for the final time and like total shame?
