What the world teaches us, that mistakes are bad, I mean, just go back to any simple childhood memory where you did something wrong, and you made a mistake, and the mistake was punished.
What we're taught is that making mistakes is bad so that we should avoid them. But what we really should be taught, it's not about avoiding mistakes, it's about error recovery. It's about making mistakes and actually being able to recover quickly from them. When you make a mistake and recover quickly just a couple of times, there's a part of you, a light switch that flicks on and says, wow, I actually learned something really valuable. I got comfortable being uncomfortable, and now I'm better because of it.

All right, welcome back or welcome to the Finding Mastery podcast. I'm Michael Gervais, and by trade and training, I'm a sport and performance psychologist, as well as the co-founder of Compete to Create. And I just gotta say 2020 already is incredibly exciting. And so I hope it is for you. And if you're on the other side of it and you're struggling, I hope you're finding some peace and knowing that all things are temporary. So that being said, the whole idea behind these conversations is to learn, but to learn from people who have committed their life efforts towards mastery. And what we wanna do is we want to not just learn for the sake of consumption, but learn in a way that has clear application.
And in doing that, we wanna set the context for how do these extraordinary people organize their inner life? Like what is their psychological framework? How do they make sense of themselves, their purpose in life? How do they explain events? Something as small as people rolling their eyes to something as like grand as, you know, I don't know, catastrophes that are happening across our planet. So that's like the big stuff. And then we double click underneath of that to get a sense of the mental skills that they use to build and refine their craft.
I wanna take a minute here to announce a really exciting event that we have coming up. As you continue to navigate the challenges and opportunities of 2024, I wanna pose a question. What are you doing right now to be great with stress? How are you working with stress on your pursuit towards your most important ambitions and goals? And I just wanna get right to the heart of the key elements, one in particular, for what it takes to excel in today's high heat, high stakes world. Because stress is not the problem that we think it is. Stress is a synonym for change. And our ability to be agile with change, that is the real opportunity at hand. So if you're wanting to unlock extraordinary results and sustainable performance in your life, it's not about avoiding or reducing stress. And as simple as that sounds, it's very tricky to do, but it is about fundamentally changing your relationship with it.
And that's why I'm so thrilled to invite you to a special event, it's a free virtual event that we're offering and it's called The Power of Embracing Stress.
