On the evening of Saturday, May 29, 1999, 66-year-old Angela Spenshaw pulled into the long driveway that led up to her house in the small seaside town of Little Compton, Rhode Island. She had just had dinner with her son Gerard and his family, who lived about 30 minutes away. Angela made the drive to her son's house at least once a week to babysit her grandkids.

She loved the fact that her son and his wife and their kids lived so close by, really because the rest of her family was pretty scattered. Her other son Justin, he lived in Washington, DC., and her extended family was all in Europe, in England, where Angela was born and raised. Angela had lived here in Little Compton for 20 years now, and unfortunately for the last eight of those years, she had lived alone because her husband had passed away. But Angela still had Gerard and his family and a lot of supportive friends in the community, and so she didn't feel totally isolated. Angela was also just really involved in this town. She rode horses at the local stables, and she was a member of the garden club, and she also worked part-time at a local greenhouse. Angela loved horticulture so much that about two months ago, she'd started renovations on her home, specifically to add this wraparound sunroom where she could grow plants, and also give her beloved grandkids some space to play and run around. However, the construction process, which was very much currently underway, was really starting to wear on Angela, because it was loud and dusty, and there were always people coming in and out all day long, making this wraparound sunroom. And so she really couldn't wait for it to be done, so she could just go back to having her privacy again. But as Angela walked her way from the driveway up to her house, she knew that her house today was going to be very quiet, because it was the weekend, which meant no construction, no construction crew.

She had the place to herself, and she was very excited about that. So Angela went inside of her very modest gray two-story home, and once inside, she went upstairs to the second floor, and she washed up and got ready for bed, because she had an early shift the next day at the garden store, and she wanted to be well-rested. And so, before long, pretty much within about 30 minutes of being home, she was in bed going to sleep.
