Uncharted (2022) Review: A Treasure Hunt That Misses the Mark

Uncharted, directed by Ruben Fleischer, is an action adventure film that attempts to bring the beloved video game series to the big screen. The movie follows the journey of Nathan Drake, played by Tom Holland, a street smart young man recruited by seasoned treasure hunter Victor Sully Sullivan, played by Mark Wahlberg. Together, they embark on a globe trotting quest to recover a fortune amassed by Ferdinand Magellan and lost by the House of Moncada 500 years ago.
Their adventure is fraught with danger as they race against Santiago Moncada, played by Antonio Banderas, who believes the treasure is his birthright. The film's premise is promising, drawing inspiration from classic adventure tales like Indiana Jones. However, it struggles to capture the magic of its source material. The video games are known for their immersive storytelling and intricate puzzles, elements that are largely absent in the film. Instead, Uncharted relies heavily on green screen effects and predictable plot points, which detract from the sense of adventure and discovery that fans of the games have come to love.
Tom Holland brings his usual charm to the role of Nathan Drake, but his portrayal lacks the depth and world weariness that the character demands. Nathan is depicted as a young adult with a preternatural knowledge of history, rather than someone who has gained wisdom through experience. This choice makes the character feel more like a generic action hero than the complex figure from the games. Mark Wahlberg's Sully also falls short as his performance lacks the gravitas and chemistry with Nathan that fans might expect. The film's action sequences, while visually impressive, fail to deliver the adrenaline rush that similar films in the genre have achieved.
The set pieces often feel like a series of cutscenes from a video game, lacking the tension and excitement needed to engage the audience fully. The narrative is further hampered by a sluggish pace and a lack of compelling character development, leaving viewers with little investment in the outcome of The Treasure Hunt.
Despite these shortcomings, Uncharted is not without its redeeming qualities. Sophia Ali shines as Chloe Fraser, bringing energy and unpredictability to the film. Her character adds a much needed spark to the otherwise formulaic plot. Additionally, the film includes several easter eggs and nods to the video games, which may delight fans familiar with the series.
Ultimately, Uncharted feels like a missed opportunity. It struggles to stand on its own as a cinematic experience, often feeling more like an advertisement for the video games than a fully realised film. While it may entertain those unfamiliar with the source material, fans of the games are likely to find it lacking in the depth and excitement that made the series so beloved.
The film's attempt to capture the spirit of adventure falls short, leaving it as a forgettable entry in the action adventure genre.
