And welcome to our breakdown. Welcome to part two of our conversation with Dr. Helané Wahbeh. She's the Director of Research at the Institute of Noetic Sciences. She is an ND, a naturopathic doctor. She is known for her pioneering research on channeling. She's authored more than 100 peer-reviewed journal articles. And we're talking about her book, The Science of Channeling, Why You Should Trust Your Intuition and Embrace the Force That Connects Us All. In part two of our conversation, she's going to explain why nearly eight out of ten people might be channeling and not even know it.

Break it down. Your particular journey and the research that you've kind of chosen to dedicate your life to, right? This book, how can we even begin to try and study from an appropriate scientific perspective, something like channeling?

Helané Wahbeh (2:33)

So when I first came to IONS, I was still kind of in the closet, if you will, and I was just ecstatic to learn that I was going to be able to blend my research background with my personal background, and be able to learn more about channeling. And what I didn't know, because I was so kind of secretive, if you will, about this part of my personal life, that there was a whole field called parapsychology that had been studying it for over a hundred years. So my mind was blown and I spent the first, I don't know how many months, just diving into the literature trying to catch up.

And what I saw was that they were, there were many studies looking at trans-channeling, but there was no kind of concerted research program, if you will. So when I came to IONS, building on what IONS did and what others had done, I developed the IONS Channeling Research Program, which is really focused on important research questions. So how common is channeling? Who can do it?

How does it work? Is the content useful? Is useful and verifiable? And so we've done a number of studies in each one of those research questions to try to figure that out. And what I can tell you, just very briefly because it would take us another week to go through all of it, is that this is incredibly common. Like eight out of 10 people have some type of channeling experiences that they don't talk about.

Oh yeah. If you're in a room, not trans-channeling, just the broader channeling. So if you're in a room of 10 people, eight out of 10 of those people will have had some type of channeling experience, even like a gut hunch thing that came true, that they don't talk about.

Number two, in terms of mental health, no, you are not crazy that most people who have these experiences are very high functioning, very well adjusted, and do not score higher on clinical screenings for psychosis or dissociation. The values are a little higher, but they don't reach a clinical threshold.

It could be because of the stigma of like the power that you have.

Yeah, and that there are a small percentage of people who the experiences are very intense and negatively focused, and they do absolutely need help. So I don't want to diminish that, but for the most part, it's actually beneficial and that people gain benefit from having these experiences in their lives. We still aren't quite sure exactly how it works, and it depends on the type of channelling that you're looking at, but it really is aligned with this non-physicalist paradigm that we're moving away from this kind of physicalist worldview into a non-physicalist one that we are all interconnected, and that somehow we're able to tap into that information. Our consciousness is not limited to our physical brain and body and that it can gain information from beyond that in ways that don't really make sense to this materialist worldview.
