I think the greatest thing I've learned in 48 years is I know who I am.
And I can admit all the garbage that I have, and there's still tons of it. Right? But at least I reckon, like my mastery is self-awareness.
And she would be sitting there going, well, you're not that self-aware. I am, I just still go, I don't like that part of me, so I don't want to talk about it all the time. But yeah, there's still a part of me that I know where that is and it still lives in me today. I think I'm a high school football coach and on NFL football coach because I recognize that if I went down that road, that NFL football, I'd be just like all those NFL guys that I hate. It's about them, it's about ambition, has nothing to do with the player, has nothing to do with the wins and the losses of the game, it's about them. I would probably be that guy. But at 47, when I decided to do this, I needed to humble myself and say, no, this isn't about me. I need to do something where it's about everybody else, because all the issues I've had in my life is when it's been about me.

Okay, welcome back or welcome to the Finding Mastery podcast. I'm Michael Gervais and by trade in training, I'm a support and performance psychologist, as well as the co-founder of Compete to Create. And the whole idea behind these conversations is to learn from people who are committed to mastery. And they might not say that like, I'm on the path of mastery, but they are committed to understanding the nuances of their craft.
And in doing so, they have so much to teach us about their framework, about the mental skills that they use, about how they organize their inner life, how they explain events outside of them. And so these conversations are meant for us to learn with one aim in mind, for us to apply the skills, to apply the insights so that we can help others do the same.
I want to take a minute here to announce a really exciting event that we have coming up. As you continue to navigate the challenges and opportunities of 2024, I want to pose a question.
