The company generated its first 2-nanometer revenue in the second quarter. Management has now positioned it as the primary third-quarter growth driver. The ramp is accelerating. The question is whether margin holds as US South cost dilution scales. Second quarter net income rose 77.4% year-over-year. Revenue grew 36%. By almost any measure, an exceptional result. It confirms technical collaboration.
It does not confirm production volumes. Analyst expectations point to potential commercial orders in the second half of 2026 That timeline is not guaranteed, and the Foundry turnaround thesis sits entirely on whether those partnerships convert to revenue. Intel's earnings call is the next real signal. Watch for any language on order pipeline or propacity reservation.
Samsung is evaluating doubling the initial production scale at its Taylor Texas facility for 2nm output. Tesla's 2nm tapeout completed in July 2026, with mass production expected in early 2027
That gives Samsung and near-term anchor customer an incredible production timeline. The word evaluating carries weight here. This isn't a formal announcement. The capacity doubling is under consideration, not committed. The risk is customer concentration. If Taylor becomes effectively a single customer fab, Samsung's Foundry economics become much more fragile. While the allied Foundry ecosystem accelerates toward 2nm in HBM4, China's semiconductor trajectory diverges more sharply. SMIC's most advanced NOs are approaching cost parity with TSMC's 7nm generation.
But yield data remains sparse, and the performance gap is estimated rather than proven.
Consider this. More structurally, IMTC's HBM3E timeline sits several years out.
Export controls on the deposition and metrology tools needed to close that gap aren't lifting. The result isn't just a technology lag. It's a compounding one.
Chinese AI infrastructure will have to be built around a different set of memory constraints, not because of a temporary shortfall, but because the access to the tools that close the gap has been structurally removed. Two quieted data points worth holding. ARM's datacenter royalties more than doubled in the most recent quarter. Every custom AI chip from Nvidia's Vera to Google's Axion to Microsoft's Cobalt runs on ARM architecture. That royalty stream doesn't require ARM to win any individual design competition. It just requires the ecosystem to keep building. That's a durable position. Marvell's datacenter segment reached $1.83 billion in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, up 27% year over year, representing 76% of total revenue. Management raised the fiscal 2027 in 2028 outlook. Custom AI silicon demand is showing up in the networking and connectivity layer, not just the GPU. The through line across all of these stories is the same structural bet. TSMC, Samsung and Intel are each committing capital at a scale that only makes sense if multi-year AI demand is real and durable. TSMC's CFL framed it as a megatrend.
That framing will be tested against margin performance across the next two to three earnings cycles. The near-term signals to watch are Intel's earnings call for any order pipeline confirmation. TSMC's third-quarter margin delivery against 65% to 67% guidance. And whether Samsung formally announces the Taylor capacity doubling.
