Tribe Talk Pilot: What It Means To Set The Mind

Finding Mastery with Dr. Michael Gervais

May 18, 2017

Normally we sit down with people who are world class - masters of craft - and we work to deconstruct and decode how they became who they are. I want to do something a little bit different here.

Finding Mastery is brought to you by LinkedIn Jobs. If you're trying to grow your business, which I think most of us are, your work is about more than just running the day to day. It's about building something with intention, shaping culture, growing a team, setting the stage for what comes next. And when it comes time to hire, you want a partner that matches that same level of clarity and care. That's where LinkedIn Jobs comes in. They make it simple to post a job, tap into your network, and connect with high quality candidates all in one place. Plus, with LinkedIn's new AI-powered tools, you can write stronger job descriptions faster. Because the right hire is more than just skills, it's about alignment. With deep candidate insights, LinkedIn helps you feel confident that you're bringing in someone who's the right fit, both for the role and for your company's values. And we can speak from personal experience here. At Finding Mastery, we've used LinkedIn Jobs to find our last several hires. If you follow Finding Mastery on LinkedIn, you would have seen these posts. And as an aside, if you don't follow us, please do. We post content there that you can't get anywhere else. It's how we found our recent project managers, Janelle and Taylor. And it's how we found our lead producer, Emma. We love what LinkedIn has created and has been such a great service for us as we've grown. If you're looking to grow your team with intention, this is a great place to start. Post your job for free at linkedin.com/findingmastery. That's linkedin.com/findingmastery to post your job for free. Terms and conditions apply.

Welcome back or welcome to the Finding Mastery podcast. I'm Michael Gervais. Normally, we sit down with people who are world-class and masters of craft, and we work to deconstruct and decode how they become who they become. I want to try something differently. I want to do something a little bit different here. The podcast landscape, it's really fun, obviously, but there's no rules, there's no path, there's literally no map about how this is supposed to work. One of the things that I've been craving doing is to be able to have conversations or answer some of the questions that come our way through social media. There's great questions on the findingmastery.net/tribe.

It's our community page that we've activated. There's great questions that come with it. And I love them, and you guys obviously love them as well that are part of the tribe, because you're supporting and challenging each other. And I want to try something out. I want to try to answer some questions, and I'm thinking that either I'll answer the questions that have the most activity around them, because obviously it's touching a chord, or maybe just ones that I vibe with, that I've been thinking about a lot as well, and I'll use it as an opportunity to really get clear on some thoughts or share those thoughts. And then maybe this, we can just build this little segment, if you will, as a canvas for me to be able to work out ideas and to share thoughts and questions, and just a place to maybe even vent, if you will. If this feels useful, fantastic. And here's a way that I think we can capture it. If you send an email to info at findingmastery.net, and then put in the subject line, Tribe Talk. What we'll do is we'll create a plan from there. If there's lots of people that are into this, fantastic. And we'll work to create a model where I can spend the time on doing this, that will either be a growth model or a paid model. We'll figure all that out. And a growth model basically would be that if you help us grow the tribe, then that in and of itself is worth the investment back to answer these questions and put some real thought and brain power into it. So that's just some thoughts that we're trying to sort out. Again, if you're into this, let us know. Send an email at info at findingmastery.net and then put the subject line Tribe Talk. So now here's the question. Here's the question I want to answer. When I get free time, I love punching over to the Finding Mastery Tribe and Dan Walsh asked this question on the tribe. And it's from a podcast with David Goggins. And if you missed that podcast, it is a gem. And so it's definitely worth going back. So he talks about, he asks, what's the difference between setting one's mind and having a mindset?

David Goggins (4:21)

I know how the mind thinks when you're going through hell. So I figured out a bunch of ways to get through it. And one way you have to get through hard things, you have to learn how to set your mind in a spot to where you think you're not even running. I mean, how the fuck do you do that? You do it off of knowing who you are as a person and how you can set your mind off into the distance, into a spot that is not even real to most people.
