I'm not ready, and maybe I disagree with most Yankee fans, I don't think he's definitely shown, like, he's better offensively just yet. I know the numbers might, I'm just saying, right now, before Judge, when Judge comes back, maybe I'll view it differently, because there'll be someone else who can actually mash. If Spencer Jones is gonna do this and hit a home run a night and really start to establish himself as a guy who can be a force in the lineup, then it becomes easy, right? Then it becomes easy. But if we're just talking about a guy who hasn't really, you know, who's kind of just been steady and pretty and solid for a young kid coming up, and now maybe the last week and a half or so, he started to make that jump. And if that's gonna continue, then this conversation is easy. I'll be the first one to change my mind. But all I'm saying is, two weeks ago, we wouldn't have compared the two. Two weeks ago, I made the joke, I was on the Disney Cruise. One person said one thing to me about the Yankees the entire week. The entire week I was on the boat, nobody came up to me, really, I was incognito.
One guy, as I'm walking to breakfast or something in the morning, one guy from across the pool deck yells, Big back!
Yankees! Grisham, keepin us alive! That's what he said to me. That's the one Yankee interaction I had the entire vacation was Grisham keeping us alive. It was when he drove in all three runs against Baltimore and they won 3-1.
Right? That's two weeks ago.
Two weeks ago, Yankee fans were screaming at me, Grisham keeping us alive. Like, he was the only one who hit in the Toronto series in Toronto. They had an ugly first couple games. Grisham was the only one doing anything. The series before that, Grisham was their best offensive player. Grisham, the Thursday I left, Grisham had the only extra base hit of the whole damn game and then he had the bad slide into second base, right? Remember that was the, he popped up and got thrown out? Like, Grisham was the only guy having good at bats in that game, that series, before the Seattle series. Like, Grisham for a two week span, two weeks ago, was their best offensive player by far and was carrying them to the point where people were yelling at me, Grisham keeping us alive! And now we talk as if, oh my, he's been awful forever. He's had a down year overall. He's had a couple of hotspots right before he got hurt.
**SPEAKER_2** (2:22)
Yeah.
**Chris McMonigle** (2:23)
And then this one right now, two weeks ago.
The last week and a half, I can't argue it. He's been ice cold. And that's the problem with Grisham. When he's cold, he's freaking ice cold.
**SPEAKER_2** (2:31)
He's awful.
**Chris McMonigle** (2:32)
He's awful. So over the last week and a half, it's not close. Over the last month, I think you could make an argument, Grisham has been the better hitter.
And moving forward, if it looks like this, then he'll play himself into it. You have a week before Judge is coming back. If he continues to hit like this, then it won't be a discussion. But I'm still at the point where I'm going to give Grisham this week to make it a discussion.
**SPEAKER_2** (2:54)
Well, also, when Judge comes back, Grisham's, the things you're saying right now, he hasn't been good defensively, he hasn't hit consistently. But if he hits in clutch moments, late in close, runs in scoring position, why can't he be that for them off the bench?
**Chris McMonigle** (3:08)
He can be.
**SPEAKER_2** (3:09)
He absolutely can be. And you can maximize those moments. If McMahon comes up in a playoff series, in a big spot, you pinch hit for him, or whoever it is, name them. I don't know who would be in. But somebody who they need to pinch hit for, you could pinch hit for them with Grisham. And the other problem is too, and you can't sacrifice defense everywhere. I also think the Yankees' best lineup offensively is too many guys at a position then, because you realistically would want somebody DH-ing that isn't DH-ing right now, and moving Garcia to second and Jazz to third, I feel like that maximizes your offense. But it's too many guys playing position.
**Chris McMonigle** (3:44)
Yeah, I don't think that's going to happen.
**SPEAKER_2** (3:47)
But then I don't see a way that Grisham is in there.
**Chris McMonigle** (3:50)
He plays center field.
